Charlotte Keylock/Kaylock/Caylock née ?

jerseylily Report 5 Feb 2012 20:45

My great x 3 grandmother was Charlotte Keylock etc (as above). From her daughter's marriage certificate her husband's Christian name was William.

On a visit to the Gloucester archives a few years ago I thought I had found her marriage at Gloucester St Aldate.

28/5/1820 William Caylock to Charlotte Bullock - which fits in nicely with the birth of her first child Charles, baptized 5/11/1820, OK so they jumped the gun a bit!

However I have recently found another William Caylock marriage in the following year, 1821, to an Elizabeth Holder, both are widowed. This marriage has me a little concerned as I now have doubts about whether Charlotte Bullock really was my ancestor. Are these both the same William? Both are from the parish of St John the Baptist, the only difference that I can see being that in the 1820 marriage William signed his own name and in the 1821 marriage he made his mark.

Charlotte was born c1796 in Sherington (1851), Charinton (1861) or Cherrington (1871)

Any thoughts from anyone as to whether the 2 William Caylock marriages are the same chap?

The marriage certificate I have is that of Harriet Kaylock to Charles Jennings, 7/12/1851, St Mark's Parish Church in the city of Gloucester. Her father is William Kaylock, Driver, it does not say deceased but as Charlotte is a widow in 1851 I assume he was.

William and Charlotte had 7 children, the last being born in 1835, I have all of their baptisms, thanks to Victor, but unlike our Jersey ones they don't give the mother's maiden name.

From what you've found Ann it would appear that Caylock in its various forms is a more common name than I had thought.

Yes Ann, those are the marriages that I found, but on the Forest of Dean site.

The fact that William signed his name for the 1st marriage but made his mark for the 2nd gives me some hope that they are not the same man.

Am I correct in thinking that Harriet is your ancestor for definite and you have only discovered that her father was William from her marriage certificate?

So you don't really know who her mother was ?

If so, what you really need is Harriet's birth certificate.

How old was she on marriage ?

EDIT :

Maybe too early for a birth cert so we're looking for a baptism

She has the baptism but no mother's maiden name on it!
Does it say Charlotte?

Harriet, baptized 1832, is definitely my ancestor and I have certificates from my Grandfather going backwards to verify this. Her mother was Charlotte from census records 1841-1871 where she is either raising her children alone or later living with Harriet's sister Selina or with her grandchildren (1871) after the death of their mother.

Charlotte had not remarried by 1871 so I think it unlikely, the 1861 marriage is almost certainly that of another daughter.

There is a baptism for a Charlotte Bullock - is Sherington, Charinton or Cherrington likely to be Ancestryspeak for Shurdington?

christening: 22 Jun 1794 SHURDINGTON,?GLOUCESTER,?ENGLAND
residence: Gloucester,? England

name: Charlotte Bullock
gender: Female

So you have the name Charlotte from the census ?

Does she never appear living with William ?

Could Harriet have made William up ( happens sometimes if mother is unmarried) or even mistaken her grandfather for her father ?

I ask because I found this .....

Charlotte does say she is a widow on the 1851 Census ....... but that, as we all know, doesn't mean anything!

If you have all the children's baptisms and yet you only discovered William's name from a marriage cert, I'm guessing his name doesn't appear on those baptisms ?

jerseylily Report 6 Feb 2012 00:49

I didn't only discover William's name from the marriage certificate, I had that first but Victor, who does Gloucestershire look ups, found these baptisms for me.
