Kelly Report 8 Jul 2010 10:26

Hello, this is my first post here, so forgive my ignorance 8-). I am trying to find info on my great grandmother, Emily Baulderstone. She would have been born around 1865 I think. She originated from South Australia, where her father, Thomas, was a butcher. Her mother's name was Charlotte. She married Robert George Cooper at Cootamundra in 1908. They had one child, Charlotte Eveline (born 1910). Emily died in Cowra in 1938 from injuries sustained in a car accident. Unlike the New South Wales Births, Deaths and Marriages registry, I don't seem to be able to search records for South Australia online. Can anyone help?

Julcoe Report 8 Jul 2010 12:13

Found the following deaths ...

Charlotte d. 2 July 1885, aged 62yrs, Adelaide bk 147, Pg 270

Thomas d. 30 June 1898, 77yrs, Goodwood Rd. Ade. bk. 253, Pg 195

?? brother..
Charles d. 18 Dec 1893, 30yrs, Goodwood Rd. Ade. Bk 215 Pg 318

If you contact the S.A. bdm office you could order death certificate.

Australian death certificate usually have a LOT of extra info. including a list of all children (with age at time of the death)
Plus "How long in colony"

This may help you track the family before their arrival in Australia.

Thank you again Julie. The top part of the info is fairly self-explanatory, but the part at the bottom (under where it lists the children) is a real mystery. Do you know what it all means?

Julcoe Report 8 Jul 2010 13:34

If you mean the part that starts..

Marriages Dec 1845...

The list of names are all the people listed on that Vol (13) & page (1091) in the district of Hartismere

Without buying a certificate we can not be 100% sure exactly who married whom... but both Thomas & Charlottes names are on the list.

You can buy certificates at ... www.gro.gov.uk

They cost around $18 and when asked if you have the GRO number tick YES

The GRO numbers are just the Volume & page numbers which I have given you here

Only ask for one name ..i.e. Thomas , and you can stipulate wifes name as Charlotte.

That way if it is not your couple, you will not be charged a full fee.

Craig Report 30 Apr 2016 15:49

Hi Kelly, I don't expect you will see this after such a long time, but felt compelled to set the record straight and maybe help others. My name is Craig Baulderstone and i know quite a bit about Emily's parents Thomas and Charlotte and before and also only recently very curious about Emily's life. I thought that she had died much earlier but then learnt from a number of sources that is not the case. I know that Emily lived at Goodwood Road with her father Thomas up until his death in 1898 "South Australian Register, Adelaide, Saturday 2nd July, ,
Mr. .Thomas Baulderstone, of Goodwood road, died on Thursday, June 30, at his residence at the age of seventy-eight. He came to the colony in the ship Sultana in the year 1851, and engaged in farming pursuits as soon as he arrived, taking up the land— an 80-acre section— on which he lived during the whole of his colonial career. He was known as one of the best and most successful farmers in South Australia. By careful tillage he always managed to produce a succession of good crops, and varied the growth of wheat with that of barley, rye, peas, &c. He has left three sons— Mr. Henry Baulderstone, of Hackney; Mr. Thomas Baulderstone, of Mundoora; and Mr. George Baulderstone, of Sydney— and one daughter, Miss Emily Baulderstone, who had been living with him. He had also eleven grandchildren." This is from Trove - have you used this?
Her eldest brother George moved from Adelaide to be a miner at Cullinga in NSW some years earlier than that, and it appears that after that she moved over to this area. She married Robert, also a Miner in 1908 that I have seen on the title to a large part of the now Adelaide suburb of Cumberland Park (as life estate that i haven't investigated yet) but was the Goodwood Road farm. "Robert George Cooper of Wombat, Miner on the 2 day of January 1908 at Christ Church Cootamundra". Emily Cooper (Baulderstone), who died in car accident 1938 (I think) - her parents were Thomas and Charlotte who came from Wickham Skeith in Suffolk England on the Sultana in 1851. Her Grandfather Christopher came via Pt. Arthur in 1834 after stealing 7 pigs, but her family goes back quite a long way in the vicinity of Wickham Skeith. Without rattling on too long, I mainly wanted to put you on the right track. Lastly, i think i saw in an obituary that George died at Emily's house, or with her support perhaps, in 1919. George remained unmarried and without children, so i like to think that after many years alone over there he had that family support there. Also i am descendent from her brother Thomas (jnr), my great grandfather and grew up on Palmer Ave, at the end of Baulderstone Rd in Myrtle Bank, SA that was the subdivision of his land. Happy to share anything i know with anyone, if you have any questions let me know. Also i would love to know any personal information you have heard about Emily and Roberts life. Also happy to correspond via email etc but that may be frowned upon - i have hardly used this site. I can refer you to family trees on Ancestry.com and My Heritage that i have assisted with if that helps - go back to 1600's for some. I have only done a months membership to be able to do this to help others, which is adding value to their site. I am not happy with this site extorting money from me to do this - don't mind paying when i am researching and getting info, but to give my knowledge simply to help others and have to pay for the privilege i do protest. Shame they don't have a free trial as with other sties.

Hi Craig, unless Kelly had 'watched' the thread so that notifications of replies would be sent to her, or returns to this site to check her thread after 6 years, no, she won't see your message. :-)

Try clicking on her name to send her a private message. If she still has the same email address as in her account, she will get a notification of that. You can tell in your 'sent messages' whether she has opened it (the envelope beside the message will disappear).

Even if she is no longer a paid-up member, she will be able to reply to your message. You can just give her the link to this thread. Quite possibly she would no longer remember her sign-in info in order to check her 'my threads' list, to find the thread.

You can certainly send her your personal email address when you do that, to avoid this site altogether. We'd love to hear in the thread if you do make contact though!

Yes, the site should have a free trial. Hopefully you paid only for a 'standard' membership as the access to records available here is not worth the fee.

The fact is that most of us who post here do pay memberships solely for the fun of helping others, and yes, the site has always earned money on our backs. The owners are so grateful that they now ignore the place entirely and have not acted on requests or suggestions in a very long time.

When your membership lapses, do not cancel it. It just reverts to unpaid status, so if someone else does try to contact you in future, you will be able to reply to the message. And click 'Watch This' or 'Add to my watched threads' on this thread in case of further replies. ... Hopefully you will see this one ... And always keep a current email address in your account here so you get notifications.

edit - virtually identical thread here started within a few weeks of this one by someone obviously related, where Craig has now also replied:
