Hi
I am trying to trace my mothers side of the family. Her father was Arthur Henry Lee born aprrox 1884 who married Violet Rand in 1905 in Foxton, New Zealand. His father was Henry Arthur Lee who married Mary Ann Mackersey. I believe that Mary Ann may have remarried a Mr Moore at some stage as my grandfather (Arthur Henry) had a stepsister Mary Anne Moore and a stepbrother Charlie Moore. Does any of this ring any bells???
Thanks :)

Just trying again to see if anyone can help :-)

Do all of these births and marriages occur in New Zealand or elsewhere?

Also, have you got a few dates for the other people you mention, or references to some censuses or other information so we can check them out?

Thank-you

This is strange, or just a big coincidence.
The New Zealand BMD only has one birth approaching this:

1883/16581
Surname Lee
Given names Henry Arthur
Mother's name Annie Amelia
Father's name Henry Arthur

which coincides with this marriage:

1882/1125
Bride's given name Annie Amelia
Bride's surname Bohee
Groom's given name Henry Arthur
Groom's surname Lee

There is only one birth for a Mackersey, a Lindsey born in 1869, and no marriages for that name :-S

Here is the remarriage of Arthur Henry Lee's mother to Moore

1910/4494
Annie Amelia Lee
William Hamilton Constine Moore

and here is the birth of half-brother Charles

1910/22251
Moore Charles Hamilton
mother Annie Amelia
father William Hamilton Constine

since it doesn't seem that Mr Moore was married before (to have a step-sister for Arthur), it may be that there was a half-sister Mary Ann Moore born after 1914 (100-year cut-off)

and for info

1934/2138 marriage
Kathleen May Mudgway
Charles Hamilton Moore

1938/17666 death
Moore Annie Amelia
73Y

1937/27404 death (?)
Moore William Hamilton
78Y

1859/6375 birth (matches age at death)
Moore William Hamilton Constantine
mother Mary Ann
father James Kerr

So Mary Ann Mackersay was not the right mother... or maybe Mr. Lee Senior was married before?
Where did you get her name from, Jennifer?

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 7 Mar 2015 21:06

I should have clarified Beverley that I certainly think you got the right parents and I just continued on from there :-)

everything else fits, the remarriage to Moore and the half-brother Charles Moore

there are several MacKersey (and McKersey) marriages in the NZ index but no Mary Anne

there are these deaths before 1882 but no way of knowing whether they relate

1873/7403 Lee Mary Ann 19Y
1870/7568 Lee Mary Ann 24H

Yes, it's just that one name that doesn't seem to fit.

Hi all,
I have my Grandfathers marriage certificate. Arthur Henry Lee married on 6 May 1905, Violet Winnifred Ethel Mary Rand. at the residence of the Reverend James Duncan in Foxton. He was born in Masterton, New Zealand. Violet was born in Foxton, New Zealand. He was 21 and she was 20 yrs old.
His parents were Henry Arthur Lee and his mother was Mary Ann Lee nee Mackersey. Mary Ann remarried at some stage and had 2 more children, Mary Ann Moore and Charlie Or Charles Moore. I think Mary Ann Moore married Harry Hetherrington Proctor, born 1895 (his father born in 1871 had the same name and married a Harriette Fuller) . I think there were other brothers to Arthur Henry Lee, as I remember my Mum having an Uncle in Levin, maybe an Uncle Con or Uncle Pat.
Maybe you have knowledge of these people.
Many many thanks for the information so far.
Jenny :-)

Only someone connected will have 'knowledge' of these people.

Have you checked search trees? One member other than you has Violet in her GR tree.

Adding 'New Zealand' to your title would be a good idea.

Jennifer- where did the name Mackersey come from?

Apart from the Mackersey name, the details posted above by Joonie and Beverley seem to fit your family.

Other possible children of Henry Arthur Lee and Annie Amelia:

1883/16581 Lee Henry Arthur. Mother: Annie Amelia. Father: Henry Arthur
1887/6129 Lee Cornelius Frederick. Mother: Annie. Father: Henry Arthur
1890/2727 Lee William Jame. Mother: Annie Amelia. Father: Henry Arthur
1892/10463 Lee George Edward. Mother: Annie. Father: Henry Arthur
1895/13186 Lee Albert Vander Mother: Annie. Father: Henry Arthurs

Annie Amelia went on to marry William H C Moore in 1910 and had child Charles H Moore.

https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/search/

Is it possible that the Mary Ann Moore that married Harry H Proctor may have been William's child from another marriage?

Gritty

Gritty Report 8 Apr 2015 11:25

This is just a possible for the birth of Mary Ann- she may have been born before Annie Lee and William H C Moore married, so registered as Lee, but married as Moore?:

1899/5999 Lee Mary Ann. Mother: Annie. Father: William Hamilton

The information about the Mackersey comes from my Grandfathers marriage certificate. This is what is confusing me as everything else fits.
Thank you for the info. Those names do ring bells as I can remember there being an uncle Con and an Uncle George (to my Mum).
This sure is a mystery as to how the name Mary Ann Lee nee Mackersey is on the marriage cert. it is an original. Are Annie and Mary Ann the same person???!
I am stumped ??

The 'National Library of NZ' (on-line) has an 'Ask a Librarian' service -they will check electoral rolls -past & present. (They MAY check newspaper death notices -if given approx. date/s.)

No idea what this means but check out these marriages from NZ BDMs!!!

1882/1125
Annie Amelia Bohee
Henry Arthur Lee

1882/1126
Amelia Bohee
William MacKersey

The numbers are consecutive!

Kate BOHEE was born in 1875 to James & Amelia (reg 6014) - no marriage found in NZ.
James BOHEE died in 1881 (reg 2621), aged 45.
Kate BOHEE married Henry KNOX in 1897

Cherilyn

Cherilyn Report 9 Apr 2015 06:03

I noticed a George BOHEE death and wondered what the connnection was:

Here it is, from PapersPast:
Evening Post, Volume CI, Issue 114, 14 May 1921, Page 1
BOHEE.—In loving memory of our dear brother (George Bohee), who died at Rotorua on the 15th May, 1920. Inserted by K. Knox, Otaki, and A. Moore, Levin.

So Kate KNOX (nee BOHEE) and Annie Amelia LEE then MOORE (nee BOHEE) were sisters, children of James & Amelia.

Their mother Amelia BOHEE remarried in 1882 after James' 1881 death to a William MacKERSEY - apparently in a double wedding with her daughter! Wm was then George, Annie and Kate's stepfather! :-D

P.S. Kate KNOX died in NZ in 1967 aged 92!
P.P.S. Archway has George BOHEE's war records and probate.

Immigration to NZ for James BOHEE in 1874
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FSBL-4MD

You can view the original document at above link.

Shows as follows
James Bohee, 35, Hampshire, labourer
Amelia, 35
Wm, 8
Anne, 6 ***this must be your direct link***
Caroline, 4
George, 2

Then daughter Kate was born in NZ the following year.

Here is their marriage in Hampshire, UK
Marriages March qtr 1864
Bohee James Hartley W 2c 209
Bush Amelia Hartley W 2c 209

If you go to FreeBMD you will see births for Wm (1865), Ann (1867), Caroline (1869, as BOHEY) and George (1871), all in Hartley Wintney.

The above marriage cert would help you go further back. :-)

Fabulous work Cherilyn :-D

Jennifer

Jennifer Report 9 Apr 2015 09:22

It still doesn't make sense to me.......on the line in my Grandfathers marriage certificate that has his name......Arthur Henry Lee, it has his father as Henry Arthur Lee and mother as Mary Ann Lee and her maiden name as Mary Ann Mackersey. Where does the Annie Amelia Bohee fit in to this.
I shall endeavour to obtain my Grandfathers Birth Certificate to see what that shows :-)

Cherilyn

Cherilyn Report 9 Apr 2015 10:15

Thanks Gritty, I was pretty chuffed too :-D

Jennifer, now it all fits perfectly, EXCEPT the Mary Ann part. But even the MacKersey is explained, so this HAS to be the right family.

If you can set aside the Mary Ann/Annie conundrum for a sec, here is the logic:

Ann BOHEE b. 1867 Hampshire to James & Amelia BOHEE
In 1874, James & Amelia and their children arrive in NZ from UK.
They had a daughter Kate in 1875.
James died in 1881, and Amelia remarried to Wm MacKersey in 1882, at the same time as her daughter Annie's marriage to your great grandfather Hy Arthur LEE in 1882:

1882/1125
Annie Amelia Bohee
Henry Arthur Lee

Henry & Annie had 5 children 1883-1895, your grandfather being the eldest.

My guess is that Annie left her husband and family sometime between 1895 and 1898, and took up with Wm Hamilton MOORE, with whom she had daughter Mary Ann (reg as LEE as she was still married, but father was really MOORE) in 1899 as posted previously here by Gritty - nice spotting.

Annie & Wm MOORE finally marry in 1910 - perhaps after the divorce was finalised?
1910/4494
Annie Amelia Lee
William Hamilton Constine Moore

And here is the birth of half-brother Charles in the same year:
1910/22251
Moore Charles Hamilton
mother Annie Amelia
father William Hamilton Constine

From the immigration list, it is seen that Annie BOHEE had a younger brother named George who died young in NZ; the notice in the paper shows a very clear connection to her as Mrs Moore of Levin, as well as her sister Kate who was born in NZ, as above, and married Knox.

Arthur was only born in 1883 so he may not have had clear memories of his mother, only going by what he was told - it is also possible he assumed that her real name was Mary Ann, like her daughter, and that Annie was a nickname, when it was actually her real name!

But yes if you are still uncertain the birth certificate should definitely seal the deal!
