SusanWA Report 7 May 2009 03:31

Could someone please check if I am on the right track?

John Robert OATES, b.1870, d.1921 Glamorgan, brothers William b.1859, d.?; James b.1853? d.?; James b.1853? d.?; Samuel b.1862, d.1938 NSW Aust.

Parents of above: OATES, Samuel, b.1833, d.1905, miner, Halsetown, St Ives, and, ROWE, Ann, b.1835, d.?, spinster, Halsetown, who married 2 July 1853. Samuel's father was William OATES, b.1798 Ludgven, mother Johanna (?). Ann's father was William ROWE, b.1797 Madron, mother Elizabeth Tonkin.

Did Samuel and Ann live in Halsetown with their widowed mothers:-

1851 Census E.Dist.2a, Parish St Ives, Folio 371, Page 7:
27 Trelyon Downs. OATS, Johanna, 58 miner's widow, Ludgven
Samuel, 18 miner

28 Trelyon Downs. ROW, Elizabeth, 51, miner's widow, Madron,
Thomas, 21; Henry, 17; Ann, 17;
Joseph, 15.
Also, Ludgven,1841 census, Book 11, folio 37, page 9:

Currossowe OATS, Johannah, 50; Eleonar, 18; Johannah,
14, "Salres" 8, (Is this Samuel?)

Hope the above makes sense. Would like to confirm I am right before going further back. Thanks.

Thank you, Christine, for your reply. I have to go out for a few hours, so I will re-read iyour reply when I return. On first glance it looks a bit confusing - are there two Johannah/Joanna's; is it safe to assume Samuel is correct, and not Larius? Will be back later, Thanks, Sue.

It does appear thet they had 2 children called Joannabut I have found this before and if a child died they often gave another the same name.

Seems strange to us now but it happened quite often.

Sorry, Jen and Christine, I couldn't get back to computer yesterday.
A couple of queries you might be able to answer:
Jen, re Johanna Oats b.2 Jul. 1819, there are two different death dates, your posting at 7.08 has 27 Jan 1832, and your 7.15 posting has 1827. Also, I had William Oats born 1798(source I can't remember).
Did you notice that Johanna b.1829, and brother Samuel b.1832 were christened on the same day as their father William was buried, 26 Jan 1833.

Hi,Jen. I understand there were two Johannas, but you have two different death dates for Johanna b.1819 - in the post of Thurs. 7.08 3.Johanna Oats pedigree...b.1819...christening 18 Jul 1819...Death 27 Jan 1827, and then on Thurs. 7.16 post there is Johanna Oats pedigree...b.1819...christening 1819.....death 27 Jan _____1832. Which date is correct? If you can do any follow-up next week that would be appreciates. Have a good weekend. Susan.

Hi Susan,

All these details about the births, deaths etc are from Familysearch, IGI index

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true
http://www.cornwall-opc.org/

Some of the confusion is because some are only submitted records, added by people researching the families whist others are actually extracted rom the orignal records.

The extracted ones can usually be relied upon whereas submitted can be wrong.

You may find this website useful, although they only have marriages for the parish of Ludgvan.

Thanks, Christine, for your reply and explanation. I was just puzzled why there was a difference of five years with the death date - I'm used to finding a couple of years. I have looked at the cornwall opc site a while back which is where I think I have found other information. Does Ancestry have extracted details? I am finding this family tree research fascinating at times, but extremely frustrating at other times!! Susan.
