Hi Everyone,
I am trying to find my grand fathers Royal Navy records
I started a thread on the GENEALOGY CHAT board asking for help with the Nation Archives site but was adviced to put all the details I have for my grandfather and see if anyone can find anything about his Royal Navy career or be able to suggest some were to look so here is what I have.

WILLIAM TERRY born 04/04/1890 Heap Bridge Hewwood Lancashire
died 10/06/1963 Bury Lancashire.
He married twice
His first marriage was 11/09/1909 Elton Bury and on his marriage certificate it gives his profession as STOKER ROYAL NAVY

His address is given as ROYAL NAVAL BARRACKS DEVONPORT

They had a son in november 1909 and on the sons birth certificate it says STOKER IN THE ROYAL NAVY.

1911 CENSUS it says he is in the CHINA SQUADRON COLOMBO aboard HMS MONMOUTH.
The Monmouth sunk with all hands in 1914 so my grandfather was not on board her then

His first wife died in 1912 on death certificate it says William is a STOKER ON A STEAM SHIP

I have a photo of him at a wedding in Bury at the beginning of 1914 . He is not in uniform.

Next date I have for him is when he married my grandmother
He married ANNIE WILKINSON 13/12/1919 and he is a FIREBEATER address BURY.

Thats it. I had thought he served in the Navy until after the 1st world war but I now wonder if he left after his first wife died
My mother never talked to me about her father my grandfather . I never knew he had been in the Navy until I purchased his marriage certificate and indeed I never even knew he had been married twice.

Any help or suggestions in finding out about his Royal Naval career would be greatly appreciated .
regards Kath

Kath, Found you. I have seen the name Maplesden in one of the searches I did. Bother, I took no notice. Now I need to back track and see if I can find out where.

AuntySherlock

AuntySherlock Report 26 May 2011 12:55

Name Terry alias Maplesden, George
Official Number: SS102322
Place of Birth: Rochdale, Lancashire
16 August 1885 ADM 188/1108

It was in the national archives. George Terry was also called George Maplesden. He was born in Lancashire. George is William's brother. Are you thinking what I am thinking?????

Kath you have the above info in my PM.

You see I told you they were good on this site.
The records are on Ancestry. As I said there is one very torn set but another filed after it which you can read quite easily.
