My wife is related to the Barhams of Rye in Sussex (her grandmother was Mary Saunders (Nee Barham 1873 - 1964).

On the Rye War Memorial is this: Mrs Matilda Jane Barham, Civilian, died Havelock Villas 10/02/1943, widow of Mr James Barham. Aged 80.

Matilda was killed when a bomb destroyed their house; my wife's mother used to visit Matilda before the last war. Matilda must have been born c1863.

I can't find any reference to a James Barham marrying a Matilda (which must have been about 1885??). Does anyone have any information about this Matilda and the James who she married?

I think I have just about all the Barhams around Rye during that period (a lot of them so I can't be sure I have them all). I have a James Barham married to Adeline Jane Axell in 1884, but she was born 1853, so it can't be her, can it?

Thanks for this. I have this census information. I think it relates to James Barham ( son of James Barham & Louisa Wood). He married an Adeline Jane Axell daughter of John Axell & Louisa Packham. Is there another Axell daughter & James Barham?

I have Adeline's sister Matilda Martha Axell marrying a William Osborne

Matilda Jane Axell (1863) is the daughter of Edward Axell & Mary Miller. Edward was the brother of John Axell who was the father of Matilda Martha Axell (1850).

Matilida Jane Axell was the daughter of Edward and Mary Axell; she was baptised on 30 March 1863 in Rye. Sadly she died and was buried on 7 April 1863 age 2 months. (Death registered June 1863 Rye).

Edward and Mary's next daughter was Jane and her birth was registered as "Exall" June 1864 Rye. On the 1881 census she was listed as "Mary Jane Exall"! Jane Axell married James Barham on 31 August 1884 in Rye. Their fathers were Edward Axell and Edgar Barham.

I would guess at some point Jane's birth certificate was looked for and the one for Matilda Jane was found instead.

Adeline Jane Axell married Charles Crosskey on 14 June 1875, registered June 1975 Woolwich.

Valerie
