One can buy BMD certs thru the GRO or thru the local RO.
Some local registers have online indices:

http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/local_bmd

Here we drill down thru:
http://www.northeastbmd.org.uk/
to:
http://www.teesvalley-indexes.co.uk/search.php

Search marriages - results for spouse of JAMES SHEPHERD
Result Year Surname Forename Initial Ref Number Click to contact
1 1913 SHEPHERD JAMES E R-X31G-1-0-19 Guisborough
2 1913 SMITH EDITH A R-X31G-1-0-19 Guisborough

1 1913 SHEPHERD JOHN R R-X31G-1-0-18 Guisborough
2 1913 SMITH SUSAN R-X31G-1-0-18 Guisborough

As you see, these local indices can resolve brothers? narrying sisters? (maybe cousins), as well as many cases pre-1912.

There are a couple of possible individuals born in Skelton according to the 1851 census:

William Smith abt 1845 Son of George, Margarett at Skelton, Yorkshire
William Smith abt 1848 Visitor at Loftus, Yorkshire

Getting the marriage certificate for William Smith and Mary Ann Turner might help by suggesting fathers for both lines:

A copy of his birth certificate should name his parents. With that information you should then be able to discover more about his ancestors.

Looking to trace both parents of my maternal grandfather.
He was a farm manager in Newton Bewley, Billingham, Cleveland, he was born in Loftus, Yorkshire.

He was married to Rose McKie, they had 4 children;

Any history for Stanley would be appreciated.
