Find Ancestors

I have drawn a blank in the search for Violet Bunting born 1864 at Newfield, Auckland, Durham, after the 1881 Census in Durham where she is listed as the daughter of Robert and Jane Bunting. In the 1971 Census she is listed as Violetta Bunting.

The family surname has been variously shown as Bunting, Bunton and Bounton but in the latter years invariably it is Bunting.

I can find neither death nor marriage for Violet Bunting and am beginning to wonder whether Violet Bunting was not the sister but was the daughter of Hannah Bunting who first married John Johnson in 1861 (and I've searched for Violet Johnson, Johnston and Johnstone). Hannah married James Doy in 1871 but I can't find a Violet Doy fitting the 1864 birth in Auckland, Durham either.

So, was Violet born 1864 the daughter of Robert and Jane or of one of their children?

Can anyone help me, please?

I think you can be fairly sure that Violet or Violetta was the daughter of Robert and Jane of Newfield Co Durham......

I've tried every connotation of Bunting, Violet, Johnson etc. and that is the reason why I'm beginning to wonder whether Violet was the granddaughter of Robert and Jane.

I simply can't trace a death or marriage for Violet Bunting which fits.

Derek, how can you be sure? If the dates on the 1881 are anything to go by, Jane would have been nearly 50 when she had Violet.

Not impossible, but unlikely?

I found the same info as you, Londonbelle and Choccy but can you find anything after 1881 for Violet/Violetta?

You'll see that there's about 12 years between Blacket and Violet - that's why I agree with MarieCeleste.

It's not beyond the realms of possibility of course that she is, indeed, Robert's and Jane's daughter but ..... I do wonder.

I was just looking for the birth as I noticed that the ages of the parents very quite a lot.

There are two people on Ancestry that have this family but you cannot see them as they are private trees.

I'm not sure about this but I'll check. In 1901 I have Robert's & Jane's son, Robert born Durham c1845 married to an Elizabeth and still living in Durham County (South East Durham). In addition, Philadelphia is not right next door to Newfield, Auckland, Durham.

However, now I'm beginning to wonder whether Robert and Jane had a niece called Violet living with them in 1871 and 1881.

Well thats what I was thinking. Is there a Philadelphia near Durham??????? or is it a foreign country one???

I've been trying to find those Bountons you found to no avail. I've also simply typed in Bounton and the year 1868 with a couple of years either side and although the machine's telling me to view the 1881 census when I press the 'View' button the following message pops up: There are no matches.

Frustrating because if I could find Violet Bounton with the same people in censuses before 1901 I'll know she's not the person I'm seeking and can rule that particular one out.

Can you find her in 1871 and 1881 which is when I have 'my' Violet living with parents, Robert and Jane, and brother Blacket?

Aha! just noticed that the Violet Bounton aged 33 on the 1901 census is Blind.
