All those 3 charlotte Roberts were red herrings .

2 potential Charlotte Roberts in ormskirk *b1876

no father given on the info given

Lottie Roberts b.appt 1884 father John Roberts married \william Coates 10th nov 1910
Harrogate St lukes Yorkshire

This is the 1st document I'll sendfor; if it's wrong we'll send for the 2 Ormskirk ones

I've been inspired by the Richard 3rd king in car park search ; mum spent years looking at the wrong charlotte ;then I dug out Lottie on a baptism cert for nana . I nearly missed cos of change from Charlotte to Lottie and baby Maisie's middle name from Fellman to Miriam

good luck out there all with your long -lost relatives hope they don't turn up under your council car park

a 9YEAR OLD DRESSMAKER ?
I found a kelly's trade directory on line for liverpool 1900 and laboriously went through pages looking under costumier ,dressmaker s draper's + tailors
looking for Fellman .Hollis and Charlotte Roberts

I found a Charlotte Robertson dressmaker b1891
which i dismissed due to name difference + 10 year age gap
but realised after that it was unlikely that a 9 year old would be in a trade's directory
Wheras a 19year old who'd just boarded out her baby could well be

stupidly I haven't saved ref how to get back on to that site so I can double check

and I forgot to look under
shirtmakers .

July 1908 John Roberts died intestate so we didn't get a will ,but we did obtain the letter of administration which left his daughter Mary Irvine the rights to administer his estate ; This letter states that she is ONE of his next of kin unfortunately not directly naming his other daughter Charlotte . So we don't know if she was married by then or where she was living.

it was never Elgar St the address of charlotte s family + given as usual residence on birth cert is 29 Edgar st The baptism has Elgin St no number given but it was a very short street ( i know it's confusing I was editing to try and make it clearer . )
. Both streets exist in Birkenhead as do others beginning with E .

jax Report 4 Nov 2012 15:57

I see you have now changed the address from Elgar street to Elgin Street on the baptism post

Could you please stop editing the thread as it is getting hard to follow

Are you sure this is the address or could the vicar have miss heard what was said?

Okay, thanks - that makes more sense to me now.

I came in on the thread searching for families living in Elgin Street

Alisoun

Alisoun Report 4 Nov 2012 14:18

jax we must have posted at same time
No it was 29 Edgar st in 1899 (the other was a misspelling )
and Elgin st (no Number ) in march 1900

jax Report 4 Nov 2012 13:59

Christina

I think it was Elgar street that she was living in 1899....but to be honest I'm pretty lost now :-D

Alisoun

Alisoun Report 4 Nov 2012 13:58

christina pls feel free to step in any time
charlotte is the daughter of John and caroline
in 1899 she gave her address as 29 Edgar st (i think we did accidently research the egerton street family for a while )
but at Maisies baptism she gives her address as Elgin st
In 1901 John is still living at 29 Edgar st with sg daughter Mary aged 23
No sign of Charlotte in 1901

I responded to your latest thread Alisoun, which has drawn my interest into this one. Please excuse me for stepping into months of research by others, but going back to the beginning here - does it give a house number for Egerton Street (where Charlotte was living in 1899)?

In 1901 there's a Roberts family living at no.77 Egerton Street, but there are so many Roberts families in the area. They may or may not be related.

Have you considered that the Charlotte Roberts who got married in Birkenhead in 1899 may have been the daughter of John and Caroline b.1882?

Jax thanks for pointing out my spelling mistake ,unforgivable really when people are being so helpful . I did look at the handwriting several times to see if Elgin was just a mistranscription of Edgar but finding Where Elgin street was on a 1909 map of birkenhead confirmed that that is where she must have been living after the birth ....she probably didn't go back to her father's house although it too is in walking distance

Alisoun Report 2 Nov 2012 18:34

Hi jax ; I posted my request on 4th Oct and they said up to 4 weeks .I've got some time off next week to do more research ,I know that Charlotte may have married by 1901 but thought it worth seeing if there were any other family connections in that street . If they put her +baby Maisie up for 3 months between birthDec 89 and baptism march 1900 they would probably still be there in 1901 census even if she wasn't . The previous generation had mostly stayed in Birkenhead and her sister was still there 10 years later ....I've only just started looking at the Gardners on her mother's side . It's just a possibility but I'd like to try every avenue...I found Elgin Street and its definitely in walking distance of her Grandad Nimrod's house that was my little success story for today .

jax

jax Report 2 Nov 2012 14:52

If Charlotte could be found on the census it would have been posted.

There is not much point in looking through all the address's

Have you recieved a copy of her fathers will yet?

Alisoun

Alisoun Report 2 Nov 2012 14:09

I'd liketo find names of people living in Elgin street in 1901 census to see if any of Charlotte Roberts relatives put her up between the birth of baby Maisie in dec1899 and her baptism in march 1900 and before she boarded her out to the Hallis family in 1901 . Charlotte (Lottie)'s grandfather ,Nimrod Gardner lived in Oliver street just behind st john's church in Grange street where maisie was baptised . It's very useful to have an old map of Birkenhead but Elgin street is not on the one I have .

jax

jax Report 19 Oct 2012 15:19

So at least it confirms the correct Charlotte

Did you get a copy of her fathers will in the end?

Alisoun

Alisoun Report 19 Oct 2012 14:33

I now have baptism details for Maisie march 1900 .She is listed as maisie myriam roberts there. Her mother is called Lottie roberts on that record and listed as lving at Elgin st (no Number) so that is new leads to follow.

This is Heather, Mother of A;isoun and daughter of Maisie, granddaughter of Charlotte. It's lovely to see all the results of everyone's hard work. Many thanks

Alisoun Report 20 May 2012 02:38

don,t forget people power it only takes 1 of the "respectable"charlotte roberts connections from search trees to come up trumps with a marriage that they can connect to birthdate1881 +place birkenhead .
I,ve left 10 messages since 16th may with hopefuls although a few didn,t know exact birth year or place and my early requests were for wrong Charlotte , 4 messages are unopened some may only visit site weekly or have stopped using it .

jax

jax Report 19 May 2012 22:04

It is all "What ifs" You do not know what happened with this family only what your grandmother could tell you. There was no legal adoption until about 1927 so Maisie was just probably taken in by a friend or relative of the family.

Unless a charlotte can be found that matches her birth details, I think this has come to a dead end.

Your only real hope of perhaps finding a name for her is by obtaining her fathers will
