"You lot" are brilliant! Thank you all so much for your time spent on "our Norm"! A bit of a Walter Mitty as it is understood that he may have been in ENSA for a while, on his discharge papers he says he was a Concert Director & Professional Musician! I have photo's of him on a luxury liner with other members of "the band" He never married and was written out of his father's will of 1920. His two sisters were Alice and Nora who some of you have researched for me in the past.
I was just hoping that there were records of him travelling to and from New York unless he lived there for some years before coming back in 1929? Grateful thanks again, Cameron

well I disappear for a while and now find all this - brilliant - Thelma's posting is spot on - this is the original request I had from my friend and I will be asking him to come on here later - he's out at the minute to see this lot

This bloody Norman was a Walter Mitty in that I believe he "fled" to America between mid 1913/1914 at outbreak of war so as not to join up! During his stay there he changes his name to Norman Curtis-Cooke, not sure what he did in America (New York) but it may have been in the entertainment business? He returns to England prior to 1917 as he joins the Army Service Corps and is stationed in Avonmouth servicing tracted vehicles, so he joins up when America decide to help us out and not wanting to get hurt does not see active service!
I was just wondering if any of you America searching lot had any record of passenger ships with either a Norman Cameron Crichton or a Norman Curtis-Cooke on board?

If Norman Cameron Crichton was the same person as Curtis-Cooke et al the it appears that it was his real name:

Just looking at the service records it appears he went AWOL in 1911, having left the country.

He was an engineer, which ties in with Ann's info. No mention of aliases for him.

Have found a well documented tree on ancestry who has the Norman Cook from the 1911 and 1915 passenger lists. He was back & forth to US quite a bit with his job, married a Florence Jowett and died in Wales in 1948.

Yours died in the West Riding of Yorkshire

message from my friend

Right age as he was born in Hull in 1889 though knowing his track record he lied about where he was "born"! However there is a Norman Cook born in Hasligden Manchester registration District 1890.
Norman's name maybe right as he changed names pretty often (however he was an engineer not a machinist) from Norman Cameron Crichton to Norman Curtis-Cooke (with an e) then Harold Norman Cooke when he died in 1949!
