According to the 1881 census the above was born in Southport, Lancashire in 1878-9. Father was James and mother Elizabeth (nee Howarth).
I know that he died on 17th March 1933 and is buried in Southport, but I cannot find any trace of his birth. I have also checked Ormskirk records as that could have been the place of registration at that time.
I really would appreciate any help that anyone more experienced than I could offer.

Have you found his parents marriage?Is it possible he was born pre the marriage so may have been reg in mmn

Mike, I believe that you have the correct marriage, but I don't think that 8b 791 is him, altho can't be sure. I've had 2 certs from Ormskirk records, 8a 238 / 8b 857 but both prove to be incorrect.
safc, I believe these marriage details to be correct.

If you want to buy the birth cert showing mother's maiden name of Howarth you can apply to •Lancashire Registration District, Certificate Services Office quoting their reference

NM/38/203
