Hi,

I am having some trouble searching for my great great grandmother, Mary Ann Cornish, nee Parminter. According to her death certificate, she was born in 1879. She married William Andrew Cornish in Stoke Dameral, Devonport, in 1898, and died in 1952 in Devonport. Together, they had 10 children, my great grandmother, Evelina was the youngest, born in 1911. My grandmother believes that Mary Ann was born in Devon, around the Newton Abbot area. From her marriage certificate I know her father's name was John Parminter, and the middle name Howard suggests that was potentially her mother's maiden name. I have found a marriage for a John Parminter to an Ann Howard in 1856, in Halstead, Essex, but at 24 years before the birth, either this is the wrong marriage, or Mary Ann lied about her age (William Andrew Cornish was 11 years older by the information I have so far, so this could be possible.). However, I cannot find a birth anywhere. I have considered the possibility that she may have been born abroad, but that doesn't fit with any of the family knowledge I have been able to dig up from my grandparents.

If any of these names, dates etc link in with any of your research, please let me know! I would love to be able to complete this branch of the family for my grandmother.

Yeah that all fits with the family knowledge. However, I can't find a birth in 1979 for Devonport - or anywhere else!

Also this one although a bit early

Name:
John Thomas Perminter

Marital Status:Married

Marriage Date:25 Dec 1850

Marriage Place:Halstead, Essex, England

Spouse: Mary Ann Newton

Just a possibility that John may have been her grandfather (unbeknown to her )... just a thought.

What was John's occupation from the marriage cert ?

Mary's birth cert would tell you who her mother was.

Hi all,

Thanks for that! It's certainly given me some more routes to look down :) Apologies for the late reply - my phone battery died, and I have only just been able to access my laptop after work.

The information from Mary Ann's marriage certificate is as follows:

William Cornish, 31, Bachelor, Labourer HM Dockyard m. Mary Ann Harvey Parminter, 21, Spinster on 10th July 1898. Fathers: Joseph Cornish, Farm Labourer (Deceased), John Harvey Parminter, Excavator (Deceased) (I think it's Excavator - it might be Executor, but the writing is difficult to decipher on the copy I have).

Thanks again for everything so far!

My great grandmother (their youngest daughter) was called Evelina. Good chance she was named after her own grandmother! Its an unusual enough name. I will definitely keep digging though :)

Thanks!

Lauren,

In your title and opening post you say her middle name was Howard, but a later post says it was Harvey?

Yeah I misread the marriage certificate I have initially - as I said, it is a very bad copy! It is definitely Harvey, but it could easily be anything!

I just found that birth :) Hadn't started searching for a death yet, so that's certainly helpful! Thanks :)

I will look into that link, looks interesting!
