The Army has a host of different names for a Private, depending on what regiment or corps the person belongs to eg. Gunner in the Royal Artillery, Sapper in the Royal Engineers, Trooper in the Household Cavalry. I think it's designed to make life difficult for everyone who isn't in the Army! They are all soldiers of the lowest military rank.

His medal card just mentions the Notts & Derby Regiment and the No 94294 but this record also mentions the Royal Engineers:

Thank you to all who has posted information about Thomas Henry and family. I did wonder myself why Thomas's wife was not mentioned on the CWGC info. I have been passed a snippet from a local paper saying " Sapper T H Marsh, Royal Engineers" about his death, but wasn't sure as it said Private on CWGC!! The rest all matches and now with this extra it all fits together. He is on our local War memorial with 2 other members of our family.

I am doing some research into various ancestors who fought and died in WW1 and have a Thomas Henry Marsh born 1878 at Retford Notts, I have found a marriage in Retford Dec qtr 1905 to Margaret Shadbolt, I don't have any information about her so it will be interesting to find out her details. He was killed in 1918 aged 40 yrs.
