Thanks for the update Eunice - nice to have been of help :-)

One thing still puzzles me though........

"Richard Grundy's wife Alice mat have passed away and he subsequently married Margaret Daniels? "

Does this mean you are still thinking that 'your' Solomon was the son of Richard and Margaret because I don't believe he is.

'That' Solomon is clearly down as Solomon through all the census and his birth is confirmed to them in 1880 in Wigan:

Lancashire Birth indexes for the years: 1880
Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Mother's Maiden Name Reference
GRUNDY Solomon Pemberton Wigan & Leigh DANIEL PEM/42/261

Also - who is the 'Alice' who was mentioned?

Thanks for the update Eunice - a sad story about the suicide, but he was obviously in a lot of pain.

Pleased that we were able to help solve a mystery - Dea's newspaper find was the key.

:-)

from Jack and Christine to all of you wonderful researchers: Thanx so much. This is definitely him. He lived in Whalley old road . He is on family census as John William. Jack's mum has never been able to remember an uncle john and the family never spoke of one. No wonder if he was nicknamed Solomon. I also had found his wife to be Eliza Tomlinson and j's mum said the money went to her family when she died. It all fits perfectly. Thanx so much for solving these mysteries. It' s wonderful. Will you please thank all the people who helped. We're so grateful. I'm sure a 94 yr old will be ecstatic too at now knowing the whole story. Thanx and best wishes to all of you.

Dea

Dea Report 19 Jul 2014 15:34

DO come back as soon as you can Eunice and get as much info as possible.

Find out everything you can about this person's parents and family members.

It is good to have something challenging to research.

AAAhha !!! - Thank you Choccy !

It would appear then that this 'could' have been 'Uncle Sol' to someone but do we have the correct one for the one we are looking for?

He certainly committed suicide in the right area at around the right time.

His wife was not 'officially' a Mariah though ??

We really need some more info from the poster.

Lancashire Evening Post - 19th June 1940

Blackburn Ill Health tragedy

'Asked by an ambulance officer why he had inflicted a wound in his throat, JOHN WILLIAM GRUNDY (64) of 256 Whalley Old Road Blackburn replied 'I have cancer. I have not slept for 6 nights''

Revealed at inquest at Blackburn today. Inflicted wound on Monday and died the following day. Lining of man's stomach had almost gone. Suffering from infection of liver which would give severe pain. No evidence of cancer.

NB It would seem he was John William Grundy (possibly known as Solomon?)
