Hello,
Is it possible for someone to do a look up for me,

I typed in Jemima Balcombe into the archive and the first hit mentioned this ladys name.

Was it a bastardy order for Jemima?

many thanks mfm

Choccy Report 31 Aug 2014 13:01

13 November 1891 - Sussex Agricultural Express

James Mitten was summoned by Jemima Balcombe to show cause etc.

The parties were a single man and woman from Wadhurst and after hearing several witnesses the bench made an order for the defendant to pay 1s 6d per week until the child (a female) attains the age of 14 years and costs of £1 6s 6d.

Dear Choccy,
Thanks for the information.
Would you say that Mr Mitten got Jemima pregnant? i cannot seem to find anything else about the possible child. There is a Mary Ann Balcombe born dec 1891 and died Dec 1891 also.I wonder if its worth me looking into this.

thanks again for the info mfm

mfm ......

Births Dec 1891 (>99%)

Balcombe Mary Ann Ticehurst 2b 105

Deaths Dec 1891 (>99%)

Balcombe Mary Ann 0 Ticehurst 2b 74

Births Dec 1891 covers the period October 1 to December 31.

A mother had 6 weeks in which to register a baby ................ therefore a baby registered in the December quarter could have been born as early as 6 weeks before October 1 ......... ie, mid August ................. or as late as December 31 (although it would be unusual to get such a quick registration).

Deaths Dec 1891 also covers the period October 1 to December 31 .................... but all deaths had to be registered within a few days, and certainly before burial

so it might well be worth your while to see if you can find out any more about this Mary Ann Balcombe
