Terence Report 1 Sep 2014 15:59

Hi,everybody, again.Trying to trace Margaret after 1871 Census.
1861 shows her,age 1,at Escombe with parents,Christopher and Sarah.This
Sarah seems to have died in 1861.
1871 shows her,age 11 at Etherley Moor,(Under name of Siddle) with her father,
who has remarried,( Sarah Davidson) and new family.
There is a marriage for a Margaret J.Liddle in 1879,Auckland to either John Coates
or Isaac Downing, but can't find Margaret under either name in 1881 Census,
Could you help please?
Regards,Terry L.

Family trees on Ancestry have Isaac marrying Mary Thomas, so the Margaret above must have married John Coates.

Thank you,Florence and every body.Interesting indeed.Sounds a good reason for not being in later Census's here. One of the mysteries is her birth place in
Gossport, Hampshire? Why? I don't know,as every thing else suggests they are
Co.Durham born.

Looks like Liddle on the image. And it says she's single.

You definitely need that marriage cert, Terence, in case we're chasing two different Margarets!

Thanks again. As you say a marriage cert may be required to prove positive.

Some details of John Coates from the marriage cert might help us trace them, too - if he married the right Margaret.

Terence Report 2 Sep 2014 19:10

Thanks Everybody. My thoughts exactly about age of MJ.1861 Census says she is only Age 1.So if 1879 marriage correct she would be 18.Maybe not that young for a marriage ,I suppose.?? Then again,1911 age should read as 51? Will have to look further into this.Still the most puzzling is her birth place ,given both in 1861&71,as
Gosport,Hampshire!!! Will plod on.Thanks to all.

Regards,Terry L.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 2 Sep 2014 22:27

There's no sign of her birth in Hampshire on FreeBMD.
But strange that Gosport is given in two censuses - if only in one it could be a mistake, but not two.

Is it possible that she was adopted - birth registered under some other name??
In which case we'll never find it.

Very true,ArgyllGran.Another mystery!! Genealogy,if nothing else,certainly stays interesting and,at times,frustrating.
Many thanks,Terry L.
