Sarah Report 22 Sep 2014 15:03

my 2nd great grandmother was born in Fermoy, Cork in 1881.
She was born on pound lane (i believe now known as devlin street)
I'm wanting to know what Catholic church's are round there so I can try and trace her baptism as her birth certificate is so hard to read.
This is a branch of the tree I feel I am totally stuck on, hopefully finding 1 piece of info will let me carry on in my search
Regards Sarah

Sarah, I suggest you post more details about her so folks on here can have a go at finding her. Name and spouse name plus when & where she married would be a start.
I assume it's her parents you are looking for.
Have you tried finding the family on 1901 census, maybe using that address? You never know!

You might find her baptism on

Sarah Report 22 Sep 2014 15:59

Yes it's her parent's i'm after, family stories were she had siblings and that some emigrated to America and with a brother becoming a priest but I have no names to start with.
Her name was Mary Riordan, father John and mother Anne (can't read her maiden name on her birth certificate)
She married in 1898 to George Storey a solider in fermoy and had already moved with her daughter Annie and husband to England by the time of the 1901 census.
If there's anything else just ask :-)

Gee Report 22 Sep 2014 16:31

Can you pick out any letters in her maiden name?

Does this look anything like?

to be honest it looks like there is a y on the end and maybe starts with a B

Sarah

Sarah Report 22 Sep 2014 18:50

n the 1901 irish census Iv found an Anne Riordan but she is already widowed at this stage so can't confirm anything but the eldest child on the cenus is John 23, then Lisbeth 17, Ellen 15, Gery 12, So there is a gap where Mary could be.
It says this Anne is 42.
I know this is defiantly guess work but she was the only Anne in Fermoy in that census (that I can see)

Do you have an occupation for John - hoping it's a bit distinctive and not 'labourer' like most of my lot!
Also wondering if you are able to PM the image to one or more of us so we can have a look - sometimes several pairs of eyes can make sense of an image, worth a try.

Have had a look at cert. I think maiden name begins with a D - if I was forced to guess I would say it's something like Dennehy??
Witnesses to Mary and George's marriage were William Rice and mary Gordon/Cordon. Residence just Formoy.

Flip Report 23 Sep 2014 10:22

I see she is in the barracks at Colchester in 1901, but where was George - do you know his age? Also, have you found them in 1911 to see if any of her relatives turn up?

Flip

Flip Report 23 Sep 2014 11:03

If family stories are to be believed, I think Ellen Riordan found with Anne on the 1901 census married James Walsh and emigrated to America in 1908 along with her son Jerimiah - going to husband in New York.

On the 1920 US census they have an adopted son, John Riordan age 12 born in New York.

So you could be on to something with the family you found.

I'm 90% sure it's Dennehy, having compared the letters to those in other words on the cert - unfortunately there is no other capital D (unless the registrar's name is John Daly, which does match I think!) . The 'hy' looks pretty clear - I think so anyway.
Would someone else have a look please|?

Only just managed to get on today!
Thank you everyone for looking
someone on another site messaged me this earlier

"John Riordan married Hannah Dennehy in 1868 at Castletownroche.
Baptismal years and places for the children of John Riordan and an unknown Dennehy (you’ll probably have to spend the 4 euros for each to see if it is some derivation of Hannah).

1869 Denis Castletownroche
1870 Ann Castletownroche
1874 John Castletownroche
1876 Daniel Glanworth
1878 Honora Kilworth
1881 Mary Fermoy
1885 Ellen Fermoy
1888 Elizabeth Fermoy
1888 Jeremiah Fermoy"

This again seems to be guiding me in the direction of this family, so now need to go and find as much info as I can :-/

I have found his military record and in 1900 he went to south Africa for 1 year 255 days

I have the 1911 census of Mary and George and there 6 children, unfortunately my great Nan is just down as infant lol
