Thanks once again JoonieCloonie :-)

This one is definitely proving difficult - Has done for ages and it is such a pain not being able to get any further on this line :-(
I too have noted the possible mistakes in transcribing. It really is a dilemma for me! Hoping to receive a reply from the man on Ancestry at some point, maybe he can shed some light on the matter.

I think you're right though, I'm going to order the John Morris 1840 certificate.

Oh!
Your last bit of info to me is not what I wanted to hear!...lol

JoonieCloonie Report 26 Sep 2014 01:09

being cautious is the best thing to be!

people who have him as John have almost certainly just copied the information from the transcription of the census somewhere ... or just as likely from the tree of someone who copied it from the transcription of the census somewhere ... so it's an indication they're not closely related and are just negligent ... it's quite common, an ancestor of mine's brother Tom appears in trees all over as Tam

but I'm wondering about this Jehu / John mistranscription thing

obviously in some cases it is mistranscription by people who have never heard of 'Jehu' (like me ...)

this is interesting

at familysearch there are two births shown as being from the GRO index with name Jehu

Jehu Bigwood Sep quarter 1839 Westbury
Jehu Badmington Sep quarter 1839 Westbury
(registered 1 page apart)

but at freebmd they are both shown as John

so I wondered

Births Sep 1840
MORRIS John Westbury 8 402

and Ancestry shows a second John Morris in the same district the next quarter, that freebmd doesn't ... vol 8 p 402

oh here's the &%$# problem ... 10 minutes of hunting around later ... it's the same entry, it's in Sep Q, and Ancestry has it as being in both Sep Q and Dec Q and the link for the later one goes to a non-existent entry on the image

so ... it definitely says John on the original ... but is it possible that he was baptised Jehu or called that in the family but registered John?

there doesn't seem to be a John Morris in Westbury reg dist in 1841 to match, which isn't conclusive but then proving a negative never is

oh yes, my head ... what I was actually doing was looking at Ancestry for those 'Jehu' births in 1840 to see what the images really say

Bigwood does look like Jehu - the e doesn't look like the o in other Johns on the page

(it can be so difficult to distinguish olde fashioned n from u that this is a tough one)

Badmington I might come down on the side of Jehu again

Jehu Bigwood, one later record: marriage 1863 in Marylebone
Jehu Badmington, no more records ... but Jehu Badminton who is surely him married in 1862 and died in 1908

so those two do seem to be Jehu mistranscribed by freebmd as John
while the John Morris in 1840 looks like John

but ... it is always possible it was mistransribed from the birth certificate or local register itself!

so I would be tempted to get that John Morris 1840 birth certificate

edit, I forgot, familysearch also has Jehu Say 1840 Westbury

freebmd and Ancestry have him as John Say ... and I say the image says Jehu

so that's another mistranscribed Jehu, the problem being that the John Morris 1840 does seem to say John in the index image, but I think it could still be worth checking the certificate

... except that no, now I see that John Morris in censuses ... in 1851 in Shropshire where his place of birth is entered as 'Westbury ditto' to 'Salop' and later in Middlesex ... so apparently not your man ...

Thank you for you help also, Andrew. I have found all the above information in my own searches, along with the photo. And it is also this person with the photo that I have tried to contact. :-)

Just worried whether I am supposed to be looking for a Jehu Morris, or a John Morris in births?

Nicola Report 26 Sep 2014 00:37

Thank you JoonieCloonie :-)

I have found Jehu in most of the census' on here but was confused as to why some people have him down as John on their tree. I have tried to contact one person about this but have had no reply as yet.
As far as I am aware, after speaking with family, and due to Jehu's son, my great grandfather being named George Jehu Morris, I have been led to believe that My gg grandfather Is named Jehu, not John. Indeed most of the searches on here have him named Jehu, which is why I'm getting a bit confused.
I don't know the person who has made changes to the transcription of his name at Ancestry in 2010 and so it is great to hear that this person is active on Ancestry daily - Thank you for this information. Hopefully I will be able to contact them and find out a bit more :-)
I've started my family tree from scratch after my making many, many stupid mistakes in my last one which is why I'm being over cautious this time around. Hence not much information in this current tree at the moment.

Thank you once again for your help :-)

that's the Ancestry user I was referring to but when I looked at the user profile it didn't show a tree :-S

here is what the tree says about Jehu

Birth Dec 1840 in Dilton Marsh Westbury Wiltshire England

so I wonder where that info comes from ... it doesn't quite match with age 1 in 1841

the tree does show Samuel Morris having three wives
Mary Brown
Elizabeth Hall
Mary Wheeler

(and Talitha might be a name after all ...)

do you know the person who made the correction to the transcription of his name at Ancestry in 2010?

apparently that person is active on Ancestry daily so if you sent a message via that system it should reach them, if you are not already in touch

aha, and he and two others here at Genes Reunited have Jehu in their trees (but you don't!) ... are you in touch with them as well?

is this the family in 1841 in Westbury?
