broomstick Report 27 Sep 2014 09:14

Hello
I have a puzzle, my great grandmother was always vague about her birth through searching I have found her by tracing back from her marriage cert, as far as I was aware she was born Florence Anne Hurwood 13/03/1886 but I never found her birth until recently but here lies another twist the date of birth is correct her last name NOT on the cert she is Florence Anne Churchill mother Louisa Hicks father Arthur Churchill area born correct Somers Town St Pancras.
On the 1891 census lists them as Florence Anne hurwood, Arthur Churchill Hurwood
I can find no record of a marriage for Louisa to a Churchill just to a Hurwood
I think I am going round in circles and don't know which way to go
Can some one point me in the right direction?????
waiting in anticipation
regards
Lorraine :-S

The surname of the child is not recorded on its birth cert

And it may be that that surname of the father was omitted for some reason - perhaps whoever registered the birth didn't actually give it

When and where was the marriage you have found?

I think the age on the 1891 census is wrong but it's hard to make out on the image, maybe 46?

Who did Florence marry?

Who did she name as her father?

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 27 Sep 2014 10:00

On the 1891 census Arthur Churchill Hurwood is only 6 years old so can't be the father of your Florence Ann Hurwood - he is her brother and the father's name is John. Is this the family you found in 1891?:-

John Hurwood Head Married Male 26 1865 French Polisher Lambeth, Middlesex, England

the ages on 1891 - I would say - are 36 for John and 27 for Louisa.

We need to know who Florence named as her father, as she isn't with family in either 1901 or 1911

I would reckon that both Arthur and Florence were illegitimate,

There is an Ancestry tree with the Hurwood family as given above. According to them Louisa's maiden name was Pearce.
Not sure if that helps or hinders!

Thank you all for your replies
I was too thinking that somewhere along the line they were both illegitimate
it is so confusing :-(
on the first marriage cert of Louisa she is Pearce marked as junior father William Pearce a glazier, her second marriage to Edward Plumb in 1899 she is 36 names her father as Henry Churchill carpenter I believe these two Louisa to be the same if the contact I have through this site is correct.
On Florence Anne Hurwood marriage cert she states that her father was John Hurwood French polisher

Jacqueline
The marriage of John Hurwood was in 1874 he is listed as a full age Lousia as junior marriage was at St Pancras church from census I think John was much older than her
Priclkyholly
I think maybe you found her as all the names are there if Louisa was to name after her mother and sister
I do know that after John died Arthur does keep the name Churchill but not so Florence

Jacqueline

Jacqueline Report 27 Sep 2014 10:45

I can't see that Louisa was the Pearce woman who married in 1874. Louisa's maiden name was CHURCHILL, and she was TEN years old in 1874

She didn't, as far as can be determined, marry Hurwood,

Florence obviously accepted John as her father
