I am unable to decipher what it says under Trade/ Profession for my 5x great grandfather John Wasdale on the 1841 census and wondered if anyone else could?

He is living with his wife Eleanor and both John and Eleanor are given as 65 years old. His son in law and daughter Joseph and Eleanor Bewley. Both are given as 30 years old and his grandson Thomas Cannon aged 8. The family are living in St Bees Village in Cumberland.

In 1851 Eleanor Wasdale is a widow and gives herself as an Annuitant and in 1861 gives herself as a Land Proprietor. So it is possible her husband was independent.

Thank you both

Yes, I believe it does stand for independent, and I think it might mean "of Independent means" i.e. doesn't do paid work

Given that ages on the 1841 were rounded down to the nearest 5 then this obituary from the Carlisle Journal dated 09 June 1848 probably explains a bit more about his financial situation.
