Hi,

I wonder if anyone could help me.

I am trying to find out where the Bristol Registry Office was in 1919.

Also I would love to find out what business was at 5 St Nicholas Street, Bristol in Nov 1919 my Grandfather and his first wife stayed at that address before they married on 6th Nov 1919.

Any help would be great.

Regards

Sally :-)

Just had a look on google earth- fabulous buildings. Still looking at the moment, the closest I have is numbers 7 & 9 in 1938 Kelly's:

Goodwin, C (E.E. V Bush Propr.), Rubber stamp mkr. and music printer. 7 & 9 St. Nicholas Street, TN24874

Looking through the census's the address seems to have a long history of being a restaurant, Coffee House and an Inn. The adjoining establishments seem to be pretty similar. Haven't found a record for 1919 though.

no. 3 St Nicholas Street was a pub:

In 1914 the premises were in use as 'Dining Rooms' run by Frederick Warren, with the Printer's to one side and on the other side the Admiral Duncan Public House and then the Bears Head next to that.

So, - it was the same in 1919 then !

Fred and his family have the Restaurant on 1911 census - they have 10 rooms but he has his 6 children also living there + a couple of people who work in the Restaurant and he has 1 Boarder.

Your couple may have worked there or boarded or were friends or relatives.??

Bristol Registry Office:

"Until the Second World War, Bristol Register Office was situated on what is now Castle Park. In November 1940 this area was destroyed by German bombers, and sadly many of our historical records of Births and Deaths were destroyed"

After it looks like it moved to Quaker's Friars, and then in 2006 to Corn Street.
