Alas the Gladys J Clough was born to a Margaret Florence Clough formerly Catlow and John William Clough. Maragaret F Catlow married her Mr Clough in 1902 in Burnley. She couldnt have been my Florence as she was only born in 1892.

I'm awaiting Dorothy's birth certificate still!

Looks like that's a possible then......

Dorothy is dead - I'm sure of that. Can't remember when though - but not recent.
But she was living in Shropshire when she died.

Of course it's possible that Dorothy is still alive...there is a death that fits for Dorothy Marion in Wrekin in 2005 and she's living with a Stephen Ball in 2002-2004 in Broseley...and Stephen is one of many B all/Clough offspring (so all a bit tenuous).

If I remember rightly Dorothy married someone named Ball

This is the "Elsie birth"...

Yes Martha was Florence's grandmother. I have her "in Memorium" card from when she was buried - all black embossed card. John Riley is interred with her at Burnley cemetery.
I always wondered why Florence wasn't living at home with her parents for the 1901 census too. I was contacted by the granddaughter of Fred Constantine, who only knew of Florence's existence after finding her at home in the 1911 census. Fred never mentioned his oldest sister apparently.

Gladys married 12/09/36 to George Taylor. Gladys's daughter Elaine is still living and gave me Gladys' birthdate.

Yes I think so...Martha Ann Spriggs married him as Martha Ann Riley.

She was Sarah Jarvis's mother and Sarah was born before she "married" John Riley and so Sarah was registered as Sarah Riley Jarvis.

I can't find a death for John Riley - but it's a common name - and I can't find a marriage for Martha Ann and him. Andrew Spriggs appears to have married only once at the age of 50 (to Martha)

Of course whilst this puts some meat on the bones it doesn't answer the original question regarding the three girls born as Clough.

Karen, if the Dorothy M born 1922 is your "Dolly" then Elsie wasn't the youngest (or Dorothy the oldest). Do you know who Dorothy and Gladys married?

I have to agree with Shirley that neither Gladys or Elsie appear to have been registered...unless Florence moonlighted as "Catlow" - there are births that match the names and dates for both Elsie and Gladys......... :-S

Just musing aloud while I get it straight in my head - so Andrew Spriggs was Florence's "step grandfather"?

I did notice too that a later newspaper report said Martha Spriggs was Florence's grandmother but hadn't checked it out. I had also pondered the recurrence of "Clough" in the various addresses after I'd posted that baptism..

There are so many instances of "Clough" in Florence's life that I am beginning to believe my own conspiracy theory. It would also explain why we can't find a marriage or a death for Harry :-)

I can't find a marriage for Martha Ann to John Riley so I think she must have just assumed his name.
