Don't think his name was altered to Sowter it's just that he couldn't read or write so it's spelt how it sounded from his speach

It's in the London parish records for marriages. And you can save it to your PC and tyen print it

Saves buying a copy plus it's the original

James Sowter on there too is given as occ seaman

Shirley, I how did you find the signed certificate on Ancestry? I never thought that Williams name would be changed to Sowter none of the others seem to been

Notice how his name is spelt on the marrige record

Many people couldnt read or write so the person making the entry spells it as they hear it

Ancestry has the parish record of the marriage and they both signed the cert with a X so they couldn't read or write

Address for both on the, cert looks like 60 Wentworth street which on the 1861 census appears to be a lodging house

She is 24 and he is 32

Don't dismiss a wrong spelling. At that time many people couldn't read or write so spelling was left to the registrar.

Shirley the first James is the wrong spelling .My mob spell it Souter x :-D

Their eldest brother James 1801 born also in Cockfield , was a police Sargent in the London Mets: I have his warrant card . But I know nothing about William

Hello. I am trying to find William Souter born in Cockfield Suffolk in 1817 his father was James Souter & his Mother was Martha Crick all of Cockfield. The Whole family. Moved to London I don't know when. William Souter Married Elizabeth Taylor at St Jude's Whitechapel 24/6/185 . I can't find them on the census or anywhere can you help please ? also Elizabeth birth is a mystery
