Have you found his birth registration? If it was after 1911 then the reg will show his mother's maiden name.

As long as the combination of both names isn't too common, look for a marriage between 2 people with the same surname and ( in the first instance) geographical area to his birth. Don't forget that he could have many siblings older than him - make sure that you set broad parameters.

If he was born before Apr 1911, he ought to be listed on the 1911 census. As long as he is with family, its usually possible to work out who his parents were.
