Find Ancestors

I have a marriage for James and Elizabeth in 1852 in Manchester can anyone help. I am unable to find a birth for James Hill.

Anthony, it would help if you give a bit more info - James's YOB, father's details etc.
Also, do you know his birthplace?

You won't find a birth for him as he would have been born before civil registration began.

The best you can hope for is a baptism record.

Do you have the marriage certificate? If so what does James give as his age and what is his father's name and occupation? That might help you find him in the 1851 census.

OK, have looked at marriage. According to this, I see James was born about 1832, father William, a joiner.

so they both gave the same address on the Parish Register. This was not unusual as it saved money by meaning that Banns only had to be read in one Parish if bride and groom lived in different parishes.

I'm not finding much to help with James!

Elizabeth says she was married on the 1861 census ............. which really tells us nothing!


she says Widowed on the 1881 Census, when her sister Alice is living with her.
