Scottish records are held on http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ which is a pay to view site.

A number of free ones are available on https://familysearch.org/

Unfortunately as the father is not named on early English MC, even if records do exist in Scotland, its almost impossible to decide if they relate to your James. Perhaps the Scottish naming pattern is reflected in those of his and Jane's children.?

Looking back, it seems that there are a number of threads about this...............

On one of them it says he died in 1834, so there will be no census info for him, which rather closes the door on any chance of finding his birthplace

The name is too common for even a guess

A tree on ancestry has him born in Dundee, Angus, Scotland and living in Scotland in 1841, 1851, and 1861 census although copies of the census records are not attached to their tree, so????
The tree also has a death for him in 1834, so both can't be true.
