Looking for the sailing of ISABEL MATLEY HERVEY from the UK to India c.1889 or perhaps into 1890. She was visiting her elder married sister and she kept a wonderful journal of her stay out there with all their travellings around. We are so lucky to have this but it is not dated! She was born in 1834 if you need to match her age. Thank you in advance.

Thank you all! We have all of this, including a wonderful photograph of her at Barley Grange [see 1881 above] with ALL the servants - eight in total, so some of them did not 'live in'.

Outward passenger lists start from 1890 on Ancestry so you might be unlucky

That passport application is very interesting, but my feeling is that it is not our girl. It is way too early in her life and we're pretty sure that she didn't travel abroad until she went out to India to visit her younger married sister Rosamond. Rosamond's married name was HANNA.
Thanks all the same for that.
:-)

Thank you Glitter Baby - can you see her??

No luck so far either in or out of the country

JoonieCloonie Report 6 Jun 2015 23:05

can you tell from the journal how long she was in India, i.e. are there daily entries, or does she date them by days of the week or month?

outbound passenger lists are only available from 1890 onward

but incoming passenger lists at Ancestry start in 1878 and I can't see anything that would fit

She is listed on Cheshire Electoral Registers from 1890 to 1896

Nicola'S

Nicola'S Report 6 Jun 2015 23:13

Yes, she makes daily entries and they go on for about six months or so. We can narrow down the date she may have written it because she makes reference to the death of her baby nephew ARCHIBALD EARLE out in Burma - he died in 1899.

OH DEAR I HAVE MADE A BAD TYPO! I hit the wrong key because the date in my first entry at the top should read 1899 and NOT 1888. So sorry and I hope this hasn't misled you all.

Please keep trying and please forgive me.

Her surname of HERVEY is often mistranscribed; we have had HIRDY, HERSEY and more. Perhaps this could be the problem here?

malyon

malyon Report 6 Jun 2015 23:30

that still could be isobel mentioned in application for passport in 1856 she would be 22yrs old

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 6 Jun 2015 23:30

do you want to edit your opening post to change 1888 to 1899?

that way anybody who looks now will not be misled too

Just make a note that you are editing, so the rest of the replies don't look kind of insane ... :-)

Thank you JoonieCloonie for your guidance. I've done the editing for the date in my opening post.
Early start in the morning - will be back to this tomorrow pm.

Thank you all. I'm back in the land of the living again. Can anyone see my gal, please? Or it has occurred to me that perhaps she travelled with her married sister ROSAMOND HANNA??
