I was wondering if someone could help me find any children for John Carruthers Steel and Mary Janet Gilbertson. John moved to Annan in Scotland and married there on the 5th July 1916. They both lived there until John died in 1961 and Mary died in 1974.

It isn't possible to enter mother's maiden name as a search term on Scotlands People for such recent births.

Therefore, all I can say is that these are all the Steel births in Annan, 1916-40.

I can't say whether or not any of them are the children of your couple.
The only way for you to find out is to buy copies of the certificates - an expensive business with so many.

Sadly I cannot afford such expense at the moment, its nearly 12 pounds per certificate, meaning it will cost over 100 pounds to check them and half of them could be the wrong ones.

This type of practice is disgusting, I can understand paying for subscriptions and what not, but they won't even allow you to check if they are the right ones.

I'm sure you have this already.

Simon, the cost is reflecting the fact that all the births you are seeking occurred less than 100 years ago. Had they been over 100 years ago they would only require 5 credits to view / download each of those birth registrations. So for a mere £14 worth of credits on Scotlandspeople you would have all ten birth registrations with all the details. You can't buy two English certificates for that price.

For those fortunate enough to live near either The Mitchell Library in Glasgow or the Scotlandspeople Centre in Edinburgh it only costs £15 to spend the day researching and you can look at as many BMDs (including those reason ones) or census records as time permits. Although you are unable to take printouts of births in the last 100 years, marriages 75 years and deaths 50 years, you are able to take notes of the details on those registrations.

Perhaps if I can purchase one of the certificates, it might give an indication of if the other births are children without the need to purchasing all of them

I think we can eliminate Gladys Irving since it appears Irving is a maiden name of the mother and there is a James Irving Steele dying in Annan in 1918 aged 4. This looks like a brother and he was born before the marriage of 1916

The Christopher Steel one though looks like a good first lead

Have you found John and Mary on census records please? I just thinking that it may be possible to narrow the births of their children if the named them for their parents or siblings.

Do you know who the informants were on either John or Mary's death registrations please? Perhaps the informants may have been one of their children or grandchildren.

Looks as though this is where the Carruthers came from, so looks as though Maggie J was Elizabeth's daughter and born before the marriage of Ephraim and Elizabeth

All information from the looks of it looks accurate. John was indeed Ephraim's son.

No idea who the informants are on the death certificates, the website does not give these details unless I buy the certificates.

I have ordered the death certificate of John's wife Mary, with luck one of the informants will be one of their children.

I didn't get John's certificate because it is likely that the informant will be Mary, his wife, since she was still alive.

I have also gotten hold of the marriage certificate, it should prove if this John Carruthers Steel is my ancestor. He should be, the service record has all the correct details
