Can anyone tell me where to look for a birth record for a British Subject born in Spain and suggest why the family may have been in Spain in the early 1800s.

Jane McFarlane was my great, great grandmother married to William Hunter, they lived mainly in Old Kilpatrick Dunbartonshire
She may be Jean McFarlane who married William Hunter on 12 Feb 1837 Barony, Lanark, Scotland IGI batch number M11968-5.
On the 1851 Scottish Census (501/00003/00018) her birth place is Spain age 36 and
On the 1861 Scottish Census (501/00003/0009) it is more specific -Spain, British Subject aged 49 making her date of birth somewhere in the region of 1811-1815

I have found a death entry in Renton Dumbarton. for Jane McFarlane on 16/12/1883 age 76, widow of William Hunter, parents John McFarlane and Janet Baird making theyear of birth 1807

Any help will be much appreciated.
