Unknown Report 6 Oct 2015 09:21

In search of confirming the whereabouts of the early years and parents/ancestors of my Great, Great Grandmother MARY CALVELEY, C1856, ROCKFERRY, BIRKENHEAD & her father JOSEPH CALVELEY (Possibly C1829 or 1833)?

I have included all known & possible information I can find for both so hope it's not too confusing to read. Hoping someone may be able to help me in some way with this.
Thanks so much in advance for your time.

KNOWN FACTS:

Alice Coles, Daughter to Mary, Born Stretford, Manchester, 02/10/1887

Date of Birth for Mary on census and Birth Registry's don't appear to tally (1856/59/60)

Marriage Record of Mary Calveley shows birth in 1856 (age 21yr)
Married @ St Mary, Birkenhead to William Henry Coles on 2nd Sept 1879.
Spouses Father Joseph Calveley (Q3, 8A,605,17).
(I have suspicions her brother possibly another Joseph (C1864) walked her down the aisle, and that perhaps her father may not have been named Joseph at all).

I have confirmed (after marriage) for Mary:
1891 Census, Sykes Street, Hulme.
Father - William H Coles, Born 1861 (30), Rugeley, Staffs, Head, Stationers Porter
Sister - Elizabeth Coles, Born 1884 (7), Birkenhead
& Alice Born 1888 (3) Birkenhead

1881 Census, 105 Beckwith Street, Birkenhead
William H Coles, 1857, 24, Head, Abbots Bromley, Staffordshire, Letter Carrier & Sorter
Mary Coles, 1856, 25, Wife, Rockferry, Cheshire (no occ)
William E Coles, 1881, 0 (3wks), Son, Birkenhead,
(In 1881 Parents & Family of William H living at Cleveland Ave, Birkenhead)

RESEARCH:

Thank you so much MarieCeleste.
I was struggling to find the marriage of Taylor, but yes it confirms the surname Hassall and also matches sadly with the registered death of a Joseph Calveley.
Oh wow yes, I see Mary's brother Joseph also has father listed as Joseph Calveley & mother Elizabeth. Robert Calvely father of Joseph confirms what I have seen in another tree, but was unable to put it all together until now. So that would make Joseph the one registered in 1833.
I have looked but unable to find 1861 census for the family either.
So the spelling of the name appears to have changed at this point.
Having looked over and over I couldn't see it, so thank you so very much, you have a gift.
:-)

This birth registry of Mary appears to fit the best given the surname spelling.
3) Mary Calvely, Born Quarter 4, 1854, Wirral
I will look into that a little more, Thanks again.

Wow. Thank you so much (mgnv).
You've given me much to go off and confirmed a number of things there not least removed any uncertainty over the birth date of Mary Calvely to 1854. Census can really be far from accurate sometimes.
I hadn't managed to make the next step up the ladder for the early years of Elizabeth Hassall and family so many thanks with that.
Couldn't thank you enough.

Unknown - it was really MC's m.cert that was so helpful - witnesses are often sibs or sibs-in-law - I wonder if Sarah Dickinson is Eliz's sis. I would have liked to have seen Eliz's 1st m.cert for her father-i-l's name to trace back Jos. Unfortunately, Ancestry's marr images for Liverpool St Peter have a 63y gap from 1844 on, but the info is available at:
http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/
Marriage: 12 Feb 1854 St Peter, Liverpool, Lancs.
Joseph Calvely - full, Joiner, Bachelor, Adlington St
Elizabeth Hassall - full, Spinster, Adlington St

Bride's Father: Joseph Hassall, Plasterer

NB his grandson Robt also becomes a shoemaker

As you can see from my 1st post, I don't have a sub to a site with English/Welsh census images - it would be nice to check occup's and pob's, and if the 1851 niece on FS is the Mary Dulston with the Hassell's.
