Hello Everyone,

I am looking for George Brown, not sure of his wife's name, but they had 9 children. Jesse (m) DOB 1879, George Robert, Thomas, Elizabeth Charlotte, Charles Benjamin DOB 1864, Alfred John (who died during the war 1914/18), Esther, Jane Harriett (died 28.4.1965),and Emily Mary. Any help finding George and his wife would be greatly appreciated. Also if anyone can help me in how to find out more about his son Alfred, who died during the war I would greatly appreciate that as well. Thanks in advance for your help :-)

Dea Report 14 Nov 2015 08:24

I have just been reading some of his army records on Ancestry:

Name: Alfred John Brown
Gender: Male
Birth Date: abt 1875
Enlistment Age: 40
Document Year: 1915
Residence Place: Grubbs Farm Staffhurst, Wood Edenbridge Kent
Regimental Number: 60270
Regiment Name: Royal Artillery
Number of Images: 23
Form Title: Short Service Attestation
Other Records: Search for 'Alfred John Brown' in other WWI collections
Family Members:
Name Relation to Soldier
Alfred John Brown Self (Head)
Cancel

They are quite interesting in that it seems his family were not notified of his death as he had said on attestation that he had no next of kin.

There is a copy of the declaration made by his family with regard to his effects on 29th April 1919 giving details of his father and names and addresses of his siblings etc.

His mother had died on 5th Feb 1905 and the form was signed by his sister Jane H Brown "as father is very ill and unable to write" - (how very sad !!)...

Alfred was unmarried and worked as a roadman.

EDIT - reading further, there is a letter to the records office from his sister Jane dated July, 1917 asking for information on her brother as they had sent him a parcel and had just had it returned to them marked "Deceased. Died of wounds in hospital 10/6/1917 "........................... What an awful way for them to hear this news.

Thank you all this is amazing!! I greatly appreciate your efforts. Chris Jesse did live in Bearsted with his wife and family. I had been given an address for him & his family as 6 Council Houses, The Street, Bearsted, Maidstone, Kent. Thanks Austin & Dea for your information on Alfred John. It is very sad that his family was unaware and that he had listed no next of kin when his 8 siblings and parents loved him enough to enquire after him. Very sad indeed :-( I just wish I could see the documents with the siblings details. The poor family Thanks again for your kindness in helping :-)
