(Tithe, the 10% tax on agricultural produce used to fund the work of the parish church remained payable as actual produce or voluntary cash compositions until the early 19th century.
The 1836 Tithe Act converted the payment of tithe in kind into a cash-based rent charge. The new rate required the accurate valuation and survey of large areas of England and Wales. Each parish map, on which every plot is numbered, is accompanied by an instrument of apportionment, known as the award. It is arranged alphabetically by the name of the landowner and can include field names and details of land use.)
