Having got my tree back to 1563 when the surname is Gover I am told during the 16th century the name Govier was change to Gover . This is when the Gover change there name because of French Protestant Donomination in the 16th century when the Govier family flee France and arrived in Swanage in Dorset.they also fled to Somerset , My side is from Swanage If any one knows when the Govier family arrive It will be so helpful Regards: Steve Gover

This is the earliest reference to the name I can find on Ancestry although the name might be mis-transcribed as the writing is very difficult to read. The same name appears on the image on 8th Nov 1554 although it doesn't appear to have been transcribe. I think that is for a burial:

Ancestry also has baptisms for the name going back to 1540 but not in Dorset. It also has a will for Agnes Gover dated 1520 although the 2nd page has probate granted 12 Sept 1625

Andrew Govier, who married Annes Bowne on July 18th 1560, at St. Mary Magdalene, Taunton, and Richard Govier, a christening witness at Wivelescombe Church, Somerset, on January 25th 1623, in the reign of James 1 of England and V1 of Scotland, 1603 - 1625. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Richard le Gofiar, which was dated 1327,

(June 6-19) Insurrection of Northumberland Upon the death of Edward VI, Northumberland attempted to place his daughter in law, Lady Jane Grey, on the throne instead of the rightful successor, Edward's sister, Mary. Northumberland was captured, and Jane was deposed and executed after a reign of nine days.

1553 Beginning of the Reign of Mary I
Re-establishment of Catholicism in England.
Her marriage to Philip of Spain added to religious unrest,
many English Catholics joined the Protestants in distrust of Spain and Spanish Catholicism.

1554 Insurrection in Kent Led by Sir Thomas Wyatt, Sir Thomas Carew, and the Duke of Suffolk, this was an attempt to prevent Mary's marriage to Philip. Wyatt was defeated and overpowered while trying to take London. The rebellion collapsed and the leaders were executed.

1557 War begins with France Mary's marriage led to English involvement in Spain's endemic wars with France

1558 End of Mary I's reign / Start of Reign of Elizabeth I (sister of Edward VI and Mary I) Elizabeth returns England to Protestantism, She followed a general policy of avoiding involvement in major continental wars.

1559 England ends war with France

Intervention in Scotland English forces assist Scots against Frenchforces in Scotland. French surrender at Leith in February, 1560.

1562 England sends troops to France to aid the Huguenots.
