or vice versa ;)

more commonly the husband abandoning though ... a wife might leave an abusive husband if she had a better option, but leaving kids with her mother and going elsewhere to work in a bar might not have been a better option

but then sometimes wives just ran off, too

maybe Sheila will share what she knows ...

Good find, Joonie

do you think Walter abandoned Lilly and the children?

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 28 Mar 2016 01:03

there's no sign of the children being supported by father as a result of him being in WW1 ........... not that that is any proof as only about 30% of the records survive!

It's as if Walter and Lil(l)y have disappeared off the earth!

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 28 Mar 2016 00:56

it all hinges on when Walter was last known to be living in England

between 1902 and 1911, dozens of W(alter) Baileys travelled out of England ...

if Walter was not known to be living and in England after his marriage, it is possible even that one or both of the children were not his

Sheila, as you can see now, it does no good for you to know things that no one else knows!

the most basic question here is: when do you last know of your grandfather being alive?

were the children with their grandmother because their father was deceased, do you think (or know)?

Thankyou for all info which i already have. I know they were married in 1902 ,and had a son named Walter born in 1902 in Middlesbrough and then had another son named Norman Henry (my Father) born in 1904 in Newcastle.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 23 Mar 2016 10:18

Do you know where they lived after marriage, Sheila?
We can't find them in 1911 census.
There is one couple with the right names, but both born in Shropshire, and married in 1910.

As a long shot for the birth of a child (what was the name of their child/children?), there's this one - not Birkenhead area, but time-wise would be feasible:

Births Jun 1910 (>99%)
BAILEY Walter Ernest Aston 6d 337

There are lots of Baileys born in Birkenhead and Cheshire generally, from 1902 onwards, but we don't know the mothers' maiden names to pinpoint the right one(s).

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 23 Mar 2016 10:07

I suspect the child born in 1920 in South Shields is the child of these parents:

Marriages Jun 1919 (>99%)
Bailey Frank Leighton S.Shields 10a 2201

Gee Report 23 Mar 2016 05:04

This may be Walter' wife. A birth in 1881 for Lily Leighton would match the birth date given on the 1939 register, below

Bailey Household (2 People)
56 Halt Street , Middlesbrough C.B., Yorkshire (North Riding), England

Lily Bailey 12 Mar 1881 Female Housemaid Married 220 1
Anthony Coles 06 Jan 1925 Male Errand Boy Single 220 2

It might be worth buying the death certificate for Lily (below)

Deaths Dec 1951
BAILEY Lilly 70 Middlesbro' 1b 646

A family tree on ancestry says they had a son in 1922

I can find one born in S Shields in 1920, but the one born in 1922 has a different mother's surname :-S
