I am researching an Edward Glover born 1816 in Nottinghamshire, who married a Mary Parker - he had many children but my link is with his son James.
I am confused with the census information - it seems there is an error in the 1851 census and I just wondered whether anyone could confirm this or help me understand where I may be going wrong.

1841 census -- all seems to ,make sense aged 25
**1851 census <<<<<< goes back to aged 19 living with parents Robert and Hannah

1861 + census --- aged 45 - all seems to make sense again.

Is this a census error or mine?

Thank you in advance!! :-)

When did he marry Mary ??

Is he on any census with her?

Lynda

Lynda Report 9 Apr 2016 18:46

According to other family trees on ancestry he married her 5th oct 1835 in Nottingham but I can't find a marriage index to confirm this.
Hes on all the census' with her... they all make sense more or less until you get to the 1851 one when he should be 35 years old but he goes back to being 19.

Dont forget the 1841,census ages were rounded to the nearest 5 years for adults

So if someone was 23 they would be recorded as 25. But aged 22 they would be recorded as 20

Lynda

Lynda Report 9 Apr 2016 18:51

Oh didn't know that.. still he's meant to be 35 in 1851 which is a large gap from 19. It's very odd.

Missing data / damaged records

The 1851 census contains transcriptions and reconstructed images for around 180,000 individuals - available online for the first time - which have been retrieved from severely damaged pages.

The records for the Manchester, Chorlton, Salford, Oldham and Ashton-Under- Lyne registration districts were water damaged many years ago due to flooding.

As a result many were too fragile to be filmed or no writing was visible, but a 14 year project by the Manchester and Lancashire Family History Society (MLFHS) has recovered information from around 82 per cent of the damaged records.

The reconstructed images follow the same layout as the originals, and where relevant include details of neighbouring households.

the glover family could be one that is water damaged

Don't think that 1861 census is them as that Edward is a mechanic

Your Edward was a Joiner

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 9 Apr 2016 19:28

I believe that's the case, safc, I've tried all sorts of combinations to try to find the family in 1851.

Edit: I was working from that 1861 census to try to find them in 1851 but then read Shirley's post and realized that I probably posted the wrong family in 1861.

Lynda

Lynda Report 9 Apr 2016 19:28

ahhh ok yes that could be a possibility then if they were living in Manchester during 1850s

Dea

Dea Report 9 Apr 2016 19:42

I do believe that the 1861 IS them even though Edward is marked as a mechanic as both William and Sarah J were born in Lancashire and their baptisms show Edward as a Joiner :

Baptism: 26 Feb 1843 St Thomas, Ardwick, Lancashire, England
Sarah Jane Glover - Daughter of Edward Glover & Mary
Abode: Ardwick
Occupation: Joiner
Notes: [Previous incomplete entry deleted. A duplicate of number 1447]
Baptised by: W. Bannister Curate
Register: Baptisms 1813 - 1844, Page 184, Entry 1466

Baptism: 20 Nov 1850 St Simon and St Jude, Manchester, Lancashire, England
William Glover - [Child] of Edward Glover & Mary
Born: 24 Oct 1850
Abode: Mild Street
Occupation: Joiner
Baptised by: Laurence F. Moran
Register: Baptisms 1849 - 1865, Page 355, Entry 2833
Source: LDS Family Search

Can't find a baptism for daughter Mary but she was born in Bolton and Lancs BMD also confirms that her mothers maiden name was Parker:

1847:
GLOVER Mary Halliwell Bolton PARKER HALL/4/46
