Please can anyone tell me how much information is given on early marriage records?

I'm trying to trace a marriage record from 1777 in Yorkshire, hoping it will give me information on the two participants, particularly the groom e.g. where he was born.

Not found the record yet but any info on what type of info it may contain would be great. Thanks!

Probably the most you will get is both names and the date. No other detail is normally recorded.

If you care to give the details then people can try to help.

Thanks, it is George Scrafton marrying Elisabeth (or Elizabeth) Simple in Welbury, Yorkshire in 1777. I am trying to find out where George was born. His children were all based around Bagby near Thirsk. It is possible he came from Marske-by-the-Sea but I have no proof of that other than a note made many years ago that there was a George Scrafton christened 9-9-1741 in Marske. I cannot find that record though and so I am not sure that it is the right George Scrafton (so many of them!).

Thank you for responding.

Thank you Malyon and Rambling Rose. I guess I will have to try and trace more information on the George S. who lived in Welbury to ascertain where he was born - he could be either of those two in Marske or neither I reckon.

Thanks, there are so many Georges though! As Welbury is near to Northallerton and Thirsk and I have names of children born to George and Elizabeth all located around Bagby and Thirsk, maybe that is the right area rather than children being born in Marske. I have their first child as James, born 1778 in Thirsk. (If I am right!)

Thanks again - I think I need to concentrate on finding out more about George Scrafton living in Welbury and marrying there in 1777.... or about his wife Elizabeth Simple - to try and find out who was George's father and where he came from.

Chris :)

20 February 1841 - York Herald - York, North Yorkshire, England

Death
On the 16th inst., at Marske. Mr. Geo. Scrafton, aged 90. His death was very sudden. Up to that time he was in the habit of walking several miles to farm houses within the vicinity of Marske, where he attended upon the farmers' horses, and then returned home to his domestic concerns, a proof of the old mans activity at such an advanced age.

Thanks Chris - I know that my George married in 1777 in Welbury so it's not that chap unfortunately. I will check out the FHS records and send off for Welbury ones. :-)

Here's a couple of examples from the oher side of the country:

Marriage: 25 Nov 1777 All Saints, Wigan, Lancs.
Will. Stopford - Dalton
Esther Ellison - (X), Dalton
Witness: Gerd. Bancks; Robert Stopforth
Married by Bans by: Thos. Whitehead
Notes: [Groom signed William Stopforth]
Source: LDS Film 1885689

Marriage: 28 Nov 1777 All Saints, Wigan, Lancs.
Peter Brown - (X), Pemberton
Peggy Rowby - (X), Pemberton
Witness: Gerd. Bancks; Willm. Banks, (X)
Married by Bans by: Thos. Whitehead
Source: LDS Film 1885689

Note the witnesses - these are often siblings of the couple - so my guess is Robert & Wlliam Stopforth are brothers (which could help in locating a baptismal record for William.).
If you look at the surrounding entries, you'll see Gerd. Bancks is on most of them. He's what I would call a "professional witness".
