I am trying to go further back in this tree. James had a brother John (1882) Mother was Bridget Roach father James Cairns . (probably b. 1841 Ireland) later married Ann Hughes and lived in Preston Lancashire.

I have the grand father of James 1881 as Patrick. Moved to Preston Lancs born Ireland.

It's the Irish bit that's difficult! :-S

Bridget Roach only married James Cairns in the year 1884 in Stockton.

The two sons James 1881 and John 1882 were born before they married. What a shame she should die that year but life was hard! I knew James moved to Preston but didn't find Bridget's death. Thank you. :-(

I looked at 1911 Census (don't have full access) and saw that a James Cairns aged 68 was still living in Preston.. He gave his place of birth as Dunmore in the Co. Galway.
Just in case he is your James I checked for James Cairns Baptism and found this....

Anne states married 24 years, no children

1911 Census is correct James Cairns lived in High Street Preston. Their son (my husband's grandfather) was born Jan 1910? Odd that he's not there? They went on to havr another two children John and Rachel.

rootgatherer. My James lived at no 101 High Street and his wife is called Ann too (nee Kerrigan). They married in 1908.

We were always told there was another family very close by. could be his Dad?
