My Grandfather was born in Cork his surname was Quinn but he was adopted and taken to England.
I am trying to find out where he was actually born and when. His adopted name was Alfred George Goodwin. He died in 1968 or 67 around 80 years old.

I think we need Susan to come back and give us some more information.

Not seeing a birth in Cork for an Alfred George. If he was "brought" to England you would expect him to be a minor or young adult and appear on the 1911 census or even an earlier census.

If adopted as a baby, his first name(s) may also have been changed by his adoptive parents - in which case we have no hope of tracing his birth.

But I agree - I would have thought he would be on the 1901 or 1911 England census.

Susan - have you any idea where in England he was brought up?

I wonder if he married under the name of George A Goodwin?

If so, he's clearly not the one we're looking for.

Thinking about it.......that would mean that the children on the Military Record were born before the marriage in 1915.

Prickles, there are several Bicknell mmn Goodwin births in Battersea ( including a Susan). I was working back from that when you beat me to the possible Goodwin / Mason marriage.

My mother is there daughter Maisie Goodwin Bicknell.She was born 18/5/1920.

Actually Susan.......your Grandfather married Florence Mary Mason.

To make things clear.........

He appears as Alfred Goodwin on his Army Service Record...Alfred George Goodwin on one of the images.

He writes his name as George Goodwin on the 1911 census.(Giving his birth place as Battersea) He is with Florence and claims they had been married 5 years. In actual fact, they didn't marry until 1915 and they had 3 children out of wedlock.

Edit: Just spotted Alfred G, Florence M and son Walter E on the 1964 and 1965 Electoral Register.......living at 266 Garrat Lane, Wandsworth.


On the 1939 register, he gives his name as Alfred G Goodwin and his date of birth as......29th May 1886.

His death was registered in the name of... Alfred G Goodwin in 1967.


If you can give us the names of his adoptive patents, we might be able to find him on the 1891 and 1901 census records to see what if gives as his place of birth,
