I wonder whether anyone can help, please.

I have two deaths both on 29 November 1980 and probably at Powell River, British Columbia where they lived. They are mother and daughter, as follows:

Gloria Jean Yip
(born 1938; occupation believed to be admin in estate agency)

Diane Lynn Tookey
(believed born in 1960 so only 20 yrs of age at death; occupation bank teller)

The same death dates have roused my suspicions that there was some sort of tragedy.

I have contacted two newspapers in Powell River and had an email from one stating that they were not open in 1980. I have googled the information and come up with zilch.

I do, thanks, Margaret, except for the Val Campbell FAGrave paragraph so I'll take a look to see whether any tragedy is mentioned there.

I have suspected for a while that the same death dates for mother and daughter indicate something untoward as far as their deaths are concerned

I also tried googling different combinations of the names with no luck.. I agree that it certainly looks like an accident of some sort.

They appear to have drowned in a Diving accident - here are the death certs:

Thank you Dea. I have been trying to find this information for quite some time.

I notice that Gloria (the mother) suffered from chronic gall bladder problems and gallstones in bladder and bile duct. If she had suffered from heart problems I probably would have speculated about her daughter trying to save her - speculation not the right thing to do though. We'll never know what happened.

A diving accident is something I had not thought about.

Again, thank you, I am grateful for your help.

I wonder whether the diving accident refers to scuba diving? It's very popular in the Powell River area where there are shipwrecks to explore, even a bronze statue of a mermaid underwater.

malyon

malyon Report 6 Aug 2016 18:47

there was flooding due to the heavy rain in 1980

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 6 Aug 2016 19:48

I don't think a "diving accident" has anything to do with heavy rain, malyon.

malyon

malyon Report 6 Aug 2016 20:33

it would if the roads were flooded and rain so heavy they could not see where they were going

Are you reading this as a d'R'iving accident rather than a diving one Malyon ??? :-S
