Something's wrong here, Kate says she immigrated 1888 and had been in US for 12 years but her children were 15 and 17 and born in Illinois.

Do you mean John Percival Dean (mmn Pullen)? Althought the Americans often use their mothers maiden name as a middle one, its confusing if his official middle name also starts with a P :-)
