I have searched for many names on the 1939 register and noticed at least 2 females who were married well after 1939 but using their up coming husband's surnames?? EG: Florence Smith( Jones) on the 1939 register had children with Jones up to 1943 and married Smith in 1966?
My question is how accurate is the 1939 info? could they say whatever name they wanted at the time?

They were first registered at their name at the time but the info was updated with marriages etc up until about 1991 wih their married names.

So, for example :

Ellen smith born 1920 who married David Jones in 1945 would be seen as Ellen Jones (Smith) on the 1939 register even though she hadn't married him yet.

Thank you Dea, that make sense now. I was looking for a Albert Lampard Secretan born in 1908, Hackney. Found his wife at the time living in wales(she was born there) they had one living child at the time born in 1935 Hackney, Florence and Doris born in 1943 in Essex. No luck finding Albert ?, thinking he must have been in the forces in 1939?

He was in Hackney in 1938, with Florence Annie:

There are 2 Secretan families living at 37 Olinda Road in 1939 but number 88 isn't in the record. Number 87 is there as is Number 89 but no 88, isn't even marked as being uninhabited or that the house was empty at the time?

Re Smiths and Secretans both living at 54 Grove Park Road in 1939:

all the other house numbers also have two different surnames living there, so each address must apply to two flats.

Yes, most of those buildings were multiple occupation, but if there was a house or flat where nobody was in, they usually put a line to show that noone was there.

But it was really just to show that Albert wasn't there in 1939.

So he must have joined up between the compilation of the 1939 ER, and 29th Sept.

Thanks everyone, I can't see the residents of 88 Olinda Road in 1939, says it is closed. I know that Albert Lampard Secretan married Florence A Medcraft in Hackney1933,they had 3 kids, Albert born 1933 and died 1933, Florence AA born in Hackney 1935 and Doris E born Dunwell Essex in 1943. I have found Albert's wife Florence A in 1939 in wales. Her husband Albert and daughter Florence AA were not with her? ArgyllGran found 2 addresses for Albert and Florence in 1938 and 1939, could this be father and daughter? as the mother was in wales at the time?

If Florence AA was born 1935, she wouldn't be on the electoral roll in 1938 & 1939.
The Florence Annie with whom Albert is listed must have been of voting age.

I know Albert's wife Florence was in Wales during the 1939 registration as it state's her later married name of Huggett. Maybe she was just visiting and had daughter Florence with her.
Their last child born in 1943, Dunmow, Essex is confusing me?
Florence living alone in 1946 in Hackney, I am sure is correct and assuming she had the 2 daughters with her, where was Albert?

Maybe already in Brighton.
