HELP I am trying to follow the line of Robert Cheyne, born 1777 in Dunnrossness. I thought I was getting on just fine and then found there were two Robert Cheynes born in Dunnrossness in 1777. The one I am trying to follow is the one born to Robert Cheyne and Ursula Mather. So am I looking at Robert Cheyne born in Sumburgh or Robert Cheyne born in Scatness. Or are they the same person.

Where did you find the information about two births / baptisms in 1777?
And specifically in Sumburgh and Scatness?

There's nothing coming up on Scotlands People, and Ancestry and FamilySearch only show the one posted by Maddie.

He's in a family tree on Ancestry.

I only see one Robert Cheyne in censuses - although of course if there was another one he could have died before 1841:

One suggests that he died before 1841 and the other does not have much information. I'm inclined to think they are the same person.

Thanks all that have answered my request about Robert Cheyne, but I am still totally confused. Also I must apologise for the delay in replying, have had 3 grandchildren for a couple of weeks so no chance to do family tree stuff.
Now onto my problem, I have two Robert Cheyne's born in Dunrossness in 1777.
All this information come from the Shetland Family History site. The first one is Robert born 20/12/1777 in Sumburgh, Dunrossness, parents Robert Cheyne and Ursula Mather. His ID # on the site is 19792. No further info about him on this number.
The second one, id # 162590 was born 1777 ( no date ) in Scatness, Dunrossness. He married a Janet Burgess and had 7 children but I do not have his parents names.
Do any of you bright people out there think these two Roberts are the same person, as that is the way I am thinking. Please Please help me I am going in circles trying to sort this out.

Dunrossness, (Old Norse: Dynrastarnes meaning "headland of the loud tide-race", referring to the noise of Sumburgh Roost) is the southernmost parish of Shetland, Scotland. Historically the name Dunrossness has usually referred to the area on the Shetland mainland south of Quarff.[1] However, in 2016 there were three separate Shetland Community Councils for a) Gulberwick, Quarff and Cunningsburgh; b) Sandwick; and c) Dunrossness.[2] The 2011 census defined Dunrossness as including everybody within the British ZE2 postal code, which goes as far north as Gulberwick. It has the best and largest area of fertile farmland of any parish in Shetland.[3] Dunrossness includes the island of Mousa, Levenwick, St Ninian's Isle, Bigton, Scousburgh, the Lochs of Spiggie and Brow, Boddam, Quendale, Virkie, Exnaboe, Grutness, Toab, Ness of Burgi, Clumlie Broch, Scatness, Sumburgh Airport, Sumburgh Head, West Voe, the islands of Lady's Holm, Little Holm, Horse Holm island and Fair Isle.[1]

Dunrossness is associated with a number of eminent people, such as Haldane Burgess, George Stewart,[4] Sir Herbert J.C. Grierson,[5] Jenny Gilbertson, Elizabeth Balneaves as well as that symbol of providence Betty Mouat. The author Sir Walter Scott visited Dunrossness in 1814 and wrote the novel The Pirate, which is set mostly in the Parish.[6] Robert Stevenson built Shetland's first lighthouse at Sumburgh Head in 1821,[6] and his son Thomas Stevenson and his grandson, the author Robert Louis Stevenson, visited the Shetland lighthouses and Fair Isle in 1870.[7]

Dunrossness had 1,505 sites of archeological interest in 2016, 181 of them scheduled (i.e. nationally important).[3] For example, Jarlshof, perhaps the best known prehistoric archaeological site in Shetland and Old Scatness (which has mediaeval, Viking, Pictish, and Iron Age remains) both lie within the parish of Dunrossness.[8]



Scatness is a settlement on the headland of Scat Ness at the southern tip of the South Shetland Mainland, Scotland, across the West Voe of Sumburgh from Sumburgh Head and close to Sumburgh Airport, the Shetland Islands' main airport. Scatness is in the parish of Dunrossness.

Scatness includes the housing estates of Sanblister Place and Colonial Place. On the east side of Scat Ness are the beaches of Outer and Inner Tumble Wick, which were Haaf Stations during the days of the Haaf Fishing.

At the south easternmost point of Scatness, off the A970 road, lies the Ness of Burgi fort,[1] an Iron Age blockhouse resembling a broch. The site is in the care of Historic Scotland.

Unfortunately, as already said, on Scotlands People there's no sign of the birth of any Robert Cheyne or other spelling, in Shetland, in 1770-80, and the only one on Ancestry or FS is the son of Ursula.

Nor do I see a Cheyne / Burgess marriage.

It is possible that both the Roberts you mention, Roy, are the same person, but I don't think we can prove it.

A lookup at http://www.freecen.org.uk/cgi/search.pl supports AG's suspicion. It shows Laurence Cheyne and the 4 names following his living in a h/h on Main Street.

we see Robert CHEYNE and Ursula MATHER had 6 kids. D.o.d's are given for the youngest 4, so presumably their d.certs support this.
The older two (Robt of Sumburgh and John) have no known d.o.d.

The marker's at Haa, maybe 100m SW of the kirk.
If one heads WNW from Kirk towards Leogh, after 50m one comes to the (co-ed) school.
Also note Busta is 300m E of kirk.
On the 1971 1:2500 map, it looks like the old school is now a church hall and I think it's a museum today.
The current school first appears on the 1908 map - follow the track NNE from the methodist hirk for 700m.
