Abraham and Rebecca Smith

I would like to thank everyone on this site who has helped me in the past. This time I would like to confirm or write off a family story about my 3 x great grandparents.

I have a marriage certificate dated 2nd August 1835. Abraham Smith and Rebecca Sarah Bradley were married by banns in the parish of St. Mary Lambeth by Chas (can't decipher the rest of his name). Witnesses were Thomas Newell and Maria Bradley. That's the easy bit.

I have an obituary for their daughter Maria Sarah from the Otago Daily Times (Dunedin NZ) dated 18/01/1918 which says she was the granddaughter of Baron Rothschild - her mother having spurned the marriage match her parents had intended for her and preferred to elope with Abraham Smith, her father's coachman. I am mainly having trouble getting my head around the Bradley name. Any help would be much appreciated.

This story is well known in our family as a cousin I had never met until 2 weeks ago asked me if I had heard it.

Thanks in advance for any info.

Jill

Hi Chris,

Sorry, just found my previous thread. I should have tagged this onto that. Thanks for pointing that out.

Hi K,

Thanks for that. Looks like a good match. Seems like our family scandal is a bit off beam. Never mind, maybe we are workhouse folk after all.
