so am i right in thinking william bain who married esther bond his father was thomas but mother was not ann fraser but jean mcccll and his father was john bain

well jean mcColl married robert bain

william bain just says born scotland on the 1851 census

he could of been born anywhere in scotland

there are quite a few william bain baptisms 1779 to 1783 in scotland ?

Thirty-three, actually, with various spellings!
Two in Inverness, 1780 and 1782.

But we don't know if the suggestion of Inverness is a red herring or not.

Maddie, out of interest, where did you find that Thomas Bains was a witness to William's marriage? None of the banns or marriage records for them on Ancestry shows that. Is that from FMP?

Does that also show that William's father's name was Thomas?

Or if not, where has that claim come from?
