John Chalmers (Born in Denny / Died Stewarton)

Hello,

This might be an impossible task but I am trying to trace the parents of my 3x Great Grandfather:

John Chalmers
1803 (ish) Born in Denny, Stirlingshire

1824 Married Mary Anderson in Stewarton, Ayrshire

1841 census: Living Stewarton. Age shown as 35 ( Possibly rounded down?)

1851 Census: Living Stewarton. Age shown as 47 (Ancestry.co.uk have misread the census and show him as 20 years older but the handwritten version reads as 47)

1852 Dies in Stewarton. Buried in Laigh Kirk (now known as St Columba’s Parish Church) and the gravestone has the following inscription:

Erected by MARY ANDERSON, in memory of her husband JOHN CHALMERS, who died in 1852, and his son ROBERT, who died 4th March, 1852, aged 25 years, and 2 daughters who died in infancy, also their daughter JEANNIE who died 1867, aged 27 years. The above MARY ANDERSON who died 20th May, 1873, aged 79 years.

1871 Census: The Chalmers family in Stewarton have a later link with Denny, as John’s son (James Chalmers) has a 14 year old nephew staying with him (also called John Chalmers) who was also born in Denny

Any help in tracing the family back further would be much appreciated.

Hi Abby,

I saw that one but thought it unlikely as none of his children were called William or Agnes. From what I have seen of Scottish genealogy, that would have been very unusual in those days?

The children that I have identified so far were called:

Robert (b 1827. d 1852)
Mary (b 1830)
Ann (b 1831)
James (b 1833. d 1901)
John Chalmers (b1834)
Jeanie (b 1841. d 1867)

Do you have Mary's parents? If some of the children were named for them, it might show if they followed a naming pattern.

ArgyllGran Report 12 Mar 2017 12:54

If the gravestone is correct, she was born c 1794.

Although there are several Mary Andersons born in Ayrshire 1790-1800, the one Maddie has posted is the only one in Stewarton.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 12 Mar 2017 12:58

John & Mary's children (unless records of any are missing) were:

Robert 1826; Mary 1828; Anne 1831; James 1833; Janet 1836; Janet 1837; Jean 1840; John 1844.
All born in Stewarton.

John's birth in 1844 would seem to support his father's death having been in 1843, not 1842. (On the other hand, it's his baptism, not necessarily his birth.)

These births/baptisms don't all match with those you listed earlier, Clive. Where did you find them? The ones I've listed are from Scotlands People.

Or maybe some are births and some are baptisms?

Hi Potty,
Mary Anderson's parents were Robert Anderson and Mary Brown.
That ties in with the first born daughter. It could be that there was an earlier son who died or else Johns father was a Robert (following the Scottish naming convention).

ArgyllGran - I think that's him dying in 1853. The 1852 comes from a faded headstone so could be misread.

Thanks Maddie - again, it seems unusual that his children's names are not any of his siblings or parents names which makes me doubt that this is the right John. I suppose he could have fallen out with his family and run away to Stewarton but there do seem to be later links to Denny so not sure

his children do have anderson parents names and names john and jean, same as siblings to william posted above but just could be coincidence

The third son would be called John under the Scottish naming tradition anyway so the only linking name is Jean. William, Agnes, Thomas, Alexander and Elizabeth are all ignored.

The fact that the oldest daughter is named after the Mothers mother and the third son is named after the father suggests they were at least partly following convention but they could just have been randomly choosing names.
