Shirley Report 15 Apr 2017 20:16

Hi
I'm trying to find any newspaper article on the above man from about 1911 to about 1937 in burnley lancashire . I find what may be relevant articles ...one in 1921 and one in 1928 in the burnley express and/or the burnley tines and download them with my credits but I can't view the articles though they save to my keepsake but I am unable to view them there . Can anyone help or advise. Was not certain it was same Leonard duxbury but I do know he lived on croft street at one point and did like to have a drink so thought that it might be him in both those articles I am unable to view
Can anyone help ? :-)

It might help to know.......

Leonard Duxbury born when and where?

Shirley

Shirley Report 15 Apr 2017 20:34

Oh yes ..sorry ..Leonard duxbury born 1891 in burnley son of Abel duxbury and elizabeth nee Parr . Leonard married Mary Hannah pickles in 1910 and they had my grandad Herbert in 1911 . Unusually they seem to have had only one child ..well one living one , maybe had Albert salisbury duxbury in 1917 but he died two months later ..not certain he is their child as yet. I think they did not get along and he seemed to spend time living apart from my great grandma perhaps due to drunken behaviour ..but was curious to see if he appeared in the local paper as I know he lived in a lodging house on croft street in burnley on occasions . :-)

20 October 1928 - Burnley Express - Burnley, Lancashire, England

This one is a joke sent in to be published in the paper's Joke Column.

'.....giving £5OO at the Vic. to anyone who finds the murderer in ' The Ringer," and I'm sure it's The Student Prince.' —Leonard Duxbury, 13, Croft-court, Burnley.

It really is not very funny at all but they had a different sense of humour back then. :-D

This one is about Abel and his wife.

Shirley

Shirley Report 15 Apr 2017 21:35

How can you tell its about Abel ? Does it mention them by name ? If it's Abel he would be living on accrington road then I think ...and in his 50,s . Thought it may be about Leonard as my great grandma was against drinking and very strict. Leonard had been a driver in the first world war in the accrington howitzers and had time on the Somme and I was imagining that maybe he came home and was behaving badly due to his war experiences maybe ?
:-) :-\

But I could check the paper on Tuesday at the library and see the article in full I think...at least I have the dates now thankfully :-D

If you are going to the library Shirley, you can also have a look at these. I am pretty sure they are all about Abel. I'm afraid he seems to have been a man who drank far too much and abused his wife. :-(

Goodness me ..sounds like it was naughty Abel not naughty Leonard ...all the time I've been thinking that Leonard must have been out of control but at least he only appeared in the paper with a joke ....seems like his dad didn't set such a good example to Leonard ....and Leonard was in the Accrington howitzers and went to the somme so maybe that affected him a little bit....thanks for that . Elizabeth must have had a hard time then as she had lots of kids ...poor woman. Seeing them in a new light ... :-( :-\ :-\ :-S. Will check out the papers next week... Interesting though so thankyou very much :-)

Croft street was a lodging house and Leonard was also separated from my great gran ...mind you ..she was a very strict tee tottaller and would not have stood for Leonard having a drink I don't think. Poor Leonard ...died very young anyway ..have never seen his death certificate . Think I should get it to see what was cause of death. :-S

Oh dear ....seeing Abel in a new light ....what a horror. No wonder she chucked him out . And if the kids had seen it as they would . Yes my mum is Marjorie ...gran is mabel . Great gran Mary Hannah. I knew she married Fred later on .. He was a bit of a drinker too to be fair ...my mum used to stay a lot so he wouldn't row when he came back from pub ....though she was fierce when crossed . Wonder if she saw what her mither in law went through and was anti drink for that reason. .....poor Elizabeth. Bet her family ...the parrs ...approved of her choice of husband. Think lizzie was quite old when she eventually got married ..no wonder . Enough to put her off :-S

Shirley

Shirley Report 16 Apr 2017 13:15

No. Just looked ..lizzie was young to get married. Think it was florrie the other daughter who either didnt get married or married late. My mum lived a lit with my great grandma as my grandma and grandad were struggling financially in the 30,s I think .. Aunty Mary stayed at home with her mum and dad ...they had quite a dew kids who died at birth or shortly after including twins . Life was tougb in those days :-S

Shirley

Shirley Report 16 Apr 2017 13:28

Just realized.. Can't find lizzies birth registered . Or Leonards . In Lancashire bmd anyway . Always thought she was daughter of Elizabeth and Abel.. Unless they just didn't register them. Maybe not if Elizabeth was in hospital or Abel in prison a lot. :-S
