You'd have to buy a copy of Elizabeth & Edward's marriage cert to find out her father's name before we can find anything about her before marriage.

There are several Elizabeth Howarths born c1856 in Manchester.

But this is Harriet Shepherd 1883 mum nee Howarth

Samuel Edward Howarth no mum maiden name
J Qtr 1883 Rochdale 8e 8

So Elizabeth couldn't have had 2 children same time at 2 different places
Or am I missing something.

Not sure what relation he is, though. He's too old to be a son of Elizabeth - unless she was only about 13? Not impossible, I suppose.

That would indeed make him a brother-in-law of Edward, as stated on the census.

No, it wouldn't. It would make him a stepson of Edward.

I don't see him in other censuses - so far.

that 6-yr-old Edward isn't the Samuel Edward we're looking for . Wrong YOB, anyway.

Must be the right family, though, as there's only one marriage showing for an Edward Shepherd to an Elizabeth Howarth.

I don't know the answer to the Harriet problem, however.

The confusion for me was due to his father not being named on his birth certificate but it's looking likely that it was Shepherd. Looks like Elizabeth was not married when Samuel was born...
