Older gravestones, if they survive are often illegible.
I have also seen graveyards, where gravestones have been stacked on the perimeter of the site, for ease of maintenance.

The church should have a map of burial plots, but not everyone could afford gravestones / memorials so defining an actual spot is not always easy.
