Thanks to everyone who has helped me out on this thread although i am still very baffled about this side of the family. I have now come to the conclusion that Patrick Fogerty died but that Mary never got re-married but was having more children to another man and that is why they were known as Butler and Fogerty.

The 1871 census is a bit odd as these are the people - Margaret A, daughter, married, and Margaret, daughter, unmarried.....surely she did not have two daughters names Margaret .. should Margaret A be Mary A do you think.......? (or is Margaret A the wife of a son?)

That sounds about right, thank you. Although age difference is of six years but it has to be the one. Is there anything on 1891 census please i've been on to GR search records and typed in Mary Fogerty about 1849 +/- 2 years and it brings up one in Leigh, atherton. I can't view results though as i am not a member. It does same for Patrick Fogerty, may be just a coincidense though.

Mary is 47 and living in Leeds, so I assume that is where 11 Bovidencey Yard is.
I could have spelt the address wrong, because it is quite badly written.

Mary Ann Fogerty is a Widow and is a Shuttlecock Maker
Florence is down as Florrie Butler (Florrie Butler)
Age 15 Leeds Yorkshire 1886
They are living at 11 Bovidency Yard

If anybody could give me any help, it would be very much appreciated as i think i have hit another brick wall. A couple of weeks ago i found out that i had a completely wrong family in my tree so for 10 years i'd been searching for Mary Downs in Sheffield when there wasn't actually one and the Mary Downs i should of been looking for was born in Leeds about 1849. I have her on the 1851 and 1861 census living with her mother Ann and father William, both born in Ireland. Mary Downs then married Patrick Fogerty in 1868, they had a daughter Margaret about 1869 born in Leeds and a son William born about 1870 also in Leeds. Both Margaret and William can be found on the 1871 census living with there grandmother. There is however no trace of Mary Foggerty on the 1871 census and it is thought that Patrick Fogerty is in prison in Leeds (if it's the right one that is). Mary's mother died in 1872 and then there is no trace of the family on any other census but i know for a fact that my Great grandmother was born 15/01/1886 in Leeds, her name was Florence Butler Fogerty. If anyone has any suggestions i'd very much love to hear them.
