Please no blanket searches for BMDs.
Please give all the info you already have, especially dates of birth and birthplaces(if known) even the County would be good.

Looking forward to helping you.

Hi Julie

I found this for Alfred How on 1891 census, but could not locate his father George.

1891 Edith Street,Westhoe,South Shields
Alfred How Head 27 Paraffin oil merchant b Norwich
Margaret How Wife 25 b South Shields
Eliza How Daur 4 b South Shields

I have not found a birth for Alfred and you will need to look at Parish Records for the birth of George as he was born prior to the start of registrations in 1837.

Hope this info is of use.

Thanks Mary.

It looks as though Alfred was married twice because on 1901 census his wife is Isabella and there is no sign of Eliza. If it is not too much trouble please could you look for deaths of Margaret and Eliza.

Mary Report 9 Dec 2007 18:23

Hi Julie
Looks as if you may have a real mystery here.
I cannot find deaths for either Margaret or Eliza How,also I cannot find a birth reg for Eliza How in County Durham(census says she was born in S Shields).
Found a marriage for :
Alfred George W How June Qtr 1886 South Shields 10a 875.Unfortunately the name of bride is not shown,so you will have to send for cert to get the name.
There is a birth reg for:
John Hall How March 1894 S Shields 10a 731.This is son of Alfred and Isabella.

Good luck if you need more help get back to me,looks as if it may be interesting!!!

Hi Mary,

Can you do a look up in the 1841 census for me please.

I'm after a William Holden born in 1840 in Darwen Lancashire

I found him in the 1851 census living at 151 Bolton Street Darwen, but I can't really make out who is parents are. It might be James or Lawrence.

His brothers and sisters are

Alice born in 1832
Mary born in 1834
Jane born in 1838
Thomas born in 1852
Ellen born in 1854

Any help would be appreciated

Simon.

Hi Mary

Thank you for your help.

Very strange... i will have to order the marriage cert after xmas. Got a few others to get as well.

I know there is a connection to Norwich, Norfolk as both Alfred and his father are listed in 1901 census as being born there as is one of Alfred and Isabella's sons.
